Tips for Setting Media Limits

Tips for Setting Media Limits
Q. American Idol has become a family staple for us -- but now that the season finale is here, I don\'t want my kids making a habit of weeknight TV. Any hints about how to turn off the tube after it\'s over?

A. Once kids get a taste of weeknight TV, it\'s hard to reset the schedule. But this is a great opportunity to point out the difference between watching a show intentionally and having the TV on as constant background noise. You\'ve still got a handful of weeks between now and the end of the school year. If you start good habits now, it won\'t be such a challenge to keep them up when summer officially starts.

Try these ideas for steering kids away from too much daily screen time:

* Vary your routine. After homework is done, plan a night out -- go to a local restaurant, go to the mall, or take a walk now that it\'s getting warm.

* Go old school and have a family game night -- cards, checkers, Monopoly. Then think about what your rules are going to be between now and the end of school.

* "Save up" for media time for the weekend and take in a movie. Instead of parking them in front of the TV, let your kids "save up" their daily screen time so you can treat them to one of the latest summer releases.
