Common Sense Review

Reviewed By: Lucy Maher

In ALL OF US, an endearing half-hour comedy produced by Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith, a pair of divorced parents try to find a way to raise their son together while moving on with their separate lives.

Robert James (Duane Martin) is a TV reporter who, with his ex-wife Neesee (LisaRaye), is raising their son Robert Jr. (Khamani Griffin) while searching for love in Los Angeles. Omnipresent in their lives is Dirk (Tony Rock), a four-times-divorced Casanova with women on the brain. Throughout the series, viewers see how Robert and Neesee balance their independent lives while putting their son's welfare first.

Families will enjoy watching All of Us together for the many scenes that could be good fodder for discussion. In one episode, for example, Robert Sr. falls for the younger Robert's karate instructor -- on whom Robert Jr. also has a crush. When Robert Jr. finds out about his dad's pursuit of the young woman, he calls him on it. His dad uses the experience to explain that he would never knowingly betray his son or demote him to second fiddle when he's in a romantic relationship. This helps Robert Jr., secure in his dad's love for him, to see that his instructor and his dad are a good match.

Given Dirk's penchant for women, the series does have some lines and scenes that parents might find objectionable. Often eager to impress, he often lies his way through dates to get what he wants. Being a family comedy, he's ultimately always found out.

Viewers who enjoy All of Us might also like Sister, Sister or The Bernie Mac Show, both of which feature unconventional family arrangements. A similarly themed show for the older set is The New Adventures of Old Christine.
