Parents need to know

Parents need to know that this show doesn't aim to be anything but pure, unadulterated fun. Sharp-tongued panelists pick over the week's pop culture headlines with glee and deconstruct them; sometimes the commentary can be vicious, but then again, that's what makes the show work.

Families can talk about what makes real-life events funny, and why it's so much fun to gossip, especially about celebrities. Why do you think certain bits make it to the show and not others? What makes these events hilarious? Families can also talk about why viewers thirst for all sorts of information on the rich and famous, and why, invariably, it's most fun when celebs are caught in the act of doing something they shouldn't.

Message

Social Behavior:

The crimes and misdemeanors of the rich and famous are aired out to dry, including boozing and drunk driving. Some of the panelists' remarks are mean-spirited (but all in the name of humor!).

Consumerism:

Drugs/Alcohol/Tobacco:

Only if the "news" warrants it, but the show does cover partying celebrities and the like.

Violence

Some violence is discussed (from celebs attacking paparazzi to bombs over Iraq), but none is perpetrated.

Sex

If sex is in the week's pop culture headlines, it's in the show, too, in the form of innuendoes and other jokes.

Language

Given that many of the panelists are comedians, mild off-color language ("damn," "hell," etc.) is part of the deal.

What's the story?

Reviewed by S. Jhoanna Robledo

BEST WEEK EVER, VH1's rundown of pop culture, takes the typical television clip show and raises the bar. The result: A weekly news magazine show without the high-mindedness or earnest zeal. Nothing gets a pass, and no punches are pulled; Michael Jackson's ongoing follies don't escape notice, and neither does something like Lance Bass's announcement that he's gay ("I was SO shocked!" mocked one comedian). All of the show's topics are treated with the same hearty irreverence that makes it such a guilty pleasure.

Is it any good?

The show's humor quotient depends a lot on what's happening in a given week. But the panelists always manage to hit the funny bone time and again, no matter the material. (That said, some commentators are much better than others.)
