What’s the Story?

Reviewed by Joly Herman

THE BROTHERS GARCIA, a fairly light comedy that doesn't tackle deeply dramatic issues, focuses on siblings Larry (Alvin Alvarez), Lorena (Vaneza Leza Pitynski), George (Bobby Gonzalez), and Ray (Carlos Lacamera), who range in age between 9 and 13. The siblings' personalities come through loud and clear -- enough so that the plot can hinge on their traits without throwing stressful or inappropriate themes into the mix. Though the functions in the family echo rather traditional roles (Mama Garcia cooking and care giving, Papa Garcia setting and enforcing rules), the mother does have her own business as a beauty salon owner. This doesn't take time away from feeding and caring for her family, though, and although Papa Garcia works as a professor, he isn't absent from the family dynamic in the least.

Is It Any Good?

The family dynamic is what makes this series gel. The Garcias' commitment to their Latin culture is admirably strong. This is evident in the language, the food, the novellas that Lorena watches on television, and the participation of Abuelita (Grandmother) in big family decisions. Ultimately, The Brothers Garcia fills a gap in TV programming; it acknowledges the Latin community's strength and presence in our society while emphasizing a set of family values that has been handed down for so many generations.
