Dancing with the Stars - TV-PG
Common Sense Note
Parents need to know that female dancers wear revealing outfits. There is occasional mild profanity (such as "kick butt"). On a positive note, the dancers are models for young viewers of strength, athleticism, and confidence. Fans can upload their own dance move videos via the show's Web site.
Families can talk about the stereotypes society has about dancers. This show demonstrates the amount of strength, discipline, hard work, and determination it takes to dance on this level. Families can also discuss the learning that occurs from constructive criticism as demonstrated by the judges. They could also talk about whether or not it's realistic to learn to dance this well in such a short amount of time.
Common Sense Review
Reviewed By: Pam Gelman
DANCING WITH THE STARS celebrates ballroom dancing and gives viewers a glimpse into the hard work that's behind the ear-to-ear grin seen under the spotlight.
Participating celebrities range from starlets to Hollywood legends, boy band pop stars to rappers, journalists to football players. Stars are young and old, and of different ethnic backgrounds.
The celebs are paired with professional dancers who put them through their own boot camp in preparation for their weekly performance. Three judges give brief critiques and cast their votes. Viewers can also vote online or by phone; the following evening, the pair with the lowest score is eliminated.
This is the rare show that can be appreciated by kids, parents, and grandparents. Parents will need to watch out for "kick butt"-type language in the comedic banter between dancers and judges, and the skimpy outfits on the female dancers' extremely toned bodies will certainly turn heads.
But mostly there's nothing to worry about. In fact, it'll be hard to watch and not get up and try some of the moves yourself. This is definitely to be tried at home, too.
