What’s the Story?

Reviewed byMelissa Camacho
DANE COOK'S TOURGASM is a behind-the-scenes look at this comedian's national stand-up comedy tour. For 30 days, Cook (known as "The Leader") shares a cramped tour bus with Robert "Bobby" Kelly ("The Instigator"), Gary Gulman ("The Conflicted") and Jay Davis ("The Newbie") as they travel from Los Angeles to Boston performing their comedy routines on college campuses. Tourgasm documents their grueling schedule, during which they must write and perfect their material, perform it, and learn how to live and play together without killing each other or Bryan Billing, their tour manager. The show includes excerpts from the foursome's various comedy routines, as well as some funny scenes of the comedians enjoying "group activities" in each city they visit. But the series' focus is divided between showing adult men taking part in juvenile behavior and highlighting the professional challenges faced by up-and-coming comedians.

Is It Any Good?

In between pranks that include going to the bathroom in a wastebasket, throwing each other's property over Niagara Falls, and squabbling over who's nicer to each other, viewers see how stand-up comics have to take chances to perfect their craft. Their willingness to go out on stage and risk not being laughed at shows that we sometimes need to learn how to fail in order to succeed at what we love to do the most. Whether or not you find the show amusing, Dane Cook's Tourgasm shows viewers that it takes hard work and hard play to be funny.
