DRAGON is a claymation adaptation of the popular book series by children's author Dav Pilkey.
The main character, Dragon, is a very friendly little blue dragon whose sometimes illogical, silly perspective on life (he tries to feed his new pet cat ice cream) creates interesting learning challenges that mirror those being faced by curious preschoolers. Each episode is broken into short chapters that divide Dragon's task and solutions into mini stories.
Children will be delighted by all of Dragon's animal friends, including Mailmouse, Cat, Alligator, Beaver, and Ostrich. They're quirky and colorful and represent varied personalities, offering kids a peek at the vast, complex social world that they're beginning to encounter.
Dragon takes an unflustered approach to problem solving, which encourages patience, creative problem solving, and teamwork. Bust best of all is Dragon's willingness to help his friends; he gives kids a positive example of sympathy, civil participation, and kindness.
Overall, this series -- with its charming storylines full of subtle life lessons for preschoolers -- is an excellent choice for families looking for alternatives to the fantasy violence and product-packed cartoons that tend to rule Saturday mornings.
Dragon fans might also like JoJo's Circus, Bear in the Big Blue House, and Babar.
