Why We Rated This on for Ages 5 and Up

The good stuff

  • Messages:

Good always triumphs over evil -- and the Blue Falcon has a remarkable tolerance for his canine sidekick's screw-ups. Features the first-ever African-American public official on a cartoon (the mayor).

What to watch out for

  • Violence & scariness:

Animated violence (scuffles, nabbing bad guys) along the lines of the average '70s superhero cartoon. It's mild by today's standards but may worry very young/sensitive kids.
  • Sexy stuff:

Female villains tend to be scantily clad (a la Wonder Woman).
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About Dynomutt

Parents need to know that this is the same late-'70s classic they may remember fondly from their own younger days. Expect some standard cartoon superhero violence (though it's all pretty lighthearted and meant to be a bit on the satirical side) and some scantily clad (a la Wonder Woman) female villains). It's worth noting that the mayor was the first-ever African-American public official in a cartoon.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about what Dynomutt has in common with other cartoon characters -- in what ways does he remind you of Scooby-Doo? How about Hong Kong Phooey? And what similarities does the show share with Batman? On the other hand, what makes Dynomutt original and funny? How is he different from those other characters?
