Why We Rated This on for Ages 10 and Up

The good stuff

  • Messages:

The crew members live on a giant living spaceship named Moya and function somewhere between a democracy and a dysfunctional military hierarchy. Though considered outlaws, these adventurers are obviously trying to do the right thing and are opposed by several violent, vaguely dictatorial alien cultures.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

Plenty of tussling in this interplanetary romp, ranging from up-close-and-personal fist fights and blaster shootouts to all-out spaceship battles.
  • Sex:

No onscreen sex or nudity, but it's clear that there are some romantic entanglements offscreen.
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Only a little.

What Parents Need to Know

About Farscape

Parents need to know that while this series isn't excessively violent, there's a lot of conflict seething below the surface. Just about every character is part of a race, faction, or army that has at least one mortal enemy -- and often more. Many of the episodes are structured around these conflicts, making anger and aggression a common plot device.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about teamwork. Most of the show's characters seem to be refugees from various interplanetary conflicts, on the run from a galactic empire, or both. As such, many of them have found refuge aboard the ship out of necessity rather than a shared sense of mission. Do you think that makes conflicts between them more likely? How do they reconcile their various goals and agendas? When they work together, is it because their teamwork is best for the group or to achieve their own ends?

    My concerns are:
    • Excessive violence
    • Inappropriate language

    • My highlights are:
    • Positive messages
    • Good role models

There IS some language and violence, but a good show still...

Crichton uses words like "a**" and "hell" and the occasional "d***". However, it's relatively tame language and most of the words are made up, such as frell. it's a great and original series, and while younger kids (around 10 or 11, I think) might be bored, if they want to watch it I'd definitely let them.

    Too bad they canceled it...

This show is one of the few truely original sci-fi shows. You'll either love the puppets or you'll hate them. Or, like me, you'll start off with dislike and move towards acceptance. It's hard to rate the language category because all swear words are completely made up. Parents should know their children, but most teenagers should be able to handle, and enjoy this gem.

an adult fantasy that is OUT OF THIS WORLD!

I wouldn't let my tween watch this show because it is very violent and sexual. But I TOTALLY love it as an adult. The writing, acting and character development are excellent! The story lines are interesting, thought provoking and often HILARIOUS! The sexual tensions are wonderful and the special effects are incredible! especially for a TV show! I really miss it. Very sad that they canceled the series.

I rate this title iffy for age 13 and give it 4.0

    A good adult/older teen show

And I wish it was still on TV... It is(was) about time a sci-fi show came along with more than a surface plot, and this was it. Funny, visual, and imaginative are the ways this could be described. Definitely for adults and older teens, but the kids may hear you laugh during some parts of it.
