Common Sense Note

Parents need to know that while this series isn't excessively violent, there's a lot of conflict seething below the surface. Just about every character is part of a race, faction, or army that has at least one mortal enemy -- and often more. Many of the episodes are structured around these conflicts, making anger and aggression a common plot device.

Families can talk about teamwork. Most of the show's characters seem to be refugees from various interplanetary conflicts, on the run from a galactic empire, or both. As such, many of them have found refuge aboard the ship out of necessity rather than a shared sense of mission. Do you think that makes conflicts between them more likely? How do they reconcile their various goals and agendas? When they work together, is it because their teamwork is best for the group or to achieve their own ends?

Common Sense Review

Reviewed By: Will Wade

When intrepid astronaut John Crichton (Ben Browder) blasts off from Earth aboard the experimental spaceship Farscape One, he accidentally falls through a wormhole and emerges on the far side of the universe, right in the middle of an interplanetary conflict.

His own ship destroyed, Crichton finds refuge aboard an enormous living spaceship named Moya, which is crewed by an eclectic band of galactic rogues. Many of his new colleagues are just as displaced as the lost astronaut, and FARSCAPE follows their adventures as they try to return to their various home planets.

Farscape has similarities to many other sci-fi shows, with a team of adventurers encountering conflicts and crises as they explore the universe. But this one stands out. Its special effects and production values are excellent; though several of Moya's crew are Muppets, they never seem any less alive than the human actors.

Even more importantly, the show's storylines and scripts manage to stay in the sweet spot between taking themselves too seriously and devolving into utter schlock. Crichton's tendency to make 20th-century pop culture references ranging from Die Hard to Monty Python is especially endearing to fans.

One of the series' strengths is that the characters are all fully fleshed out. Though they come from different planets with different cultures, each has a unique back story explaining how and why they ended up on the run.

As entertaing as the show is, Farscape's depth also makes it complex, and newbie viewers may have trouble following along. There are so many political conflicts between the various races, factions, and empires that it can sometimes be hard to understand why the Scarrans and Sebaceans are enemies, and why everyone is afraid of the Peacekeepers.

Fans of Farscape will probably like any of the Star Trek shows, as well as Stargate SG-1 and its spin-off, Stargate Atlantis.

No onscreen sex or nudity, but it's clear that there are some romantic entanglements offscreen.

Plenty of tussling in this interplanetary romp, ranging from up-close-and-personal fist fights and blaster shootouts to all-out spaceship battles.

Social Behavior

The crew members live on a giant living spaceship named Moya and function somewhere between a democracy and a dysfunctional military hierarchy. Though considered outlaws, these adventurers are obviously trying to do the right thing and are opposed by several violent, vaguely dictatorial alien cultures.

Drug/Alcohol/Tobacco

Only a little.
