Parents need to know
Families can talk about self-respect. The contestants on the show undergo vile and outrageous stunts for money. Have your kids ever faced similar "I dare you" situations at school? If so, how did they react? Is it ever worth putting yourself at such risk to win a prize? How much of what you see on screen do you think really happened that way? How can editing affect viewers' perception of what they see?
Message
Social Behavior:
Some racial diversity. Teammates bicker and contestants form petty rivalries. Little humor, but some competitive egging-on and put-downs.
Consumerism:
Contestants play for money and prizes, many of which are brand-name products such as cars and cameras.
Drugs/Alcohol/Tobacco:
Violence
Stunts look dangerous. Contestants take part in daredevil and seemingly life-threatening situations.
Sex
Contestants' bathing suits and outfits show a lot of bare skin and curves.
Language
Contestants often use profanity, but anything stronger than "ass," "hell," and the like is bleeped out, and their mouths blurred.

What's the story?

Is it any good?
Although contestants may seem brave, in general they aren't good role models for young people. They play for cash prizes, with the road to victory paved more with greed than pride of accomplishment. Parents may want to discuss with their kids how the show gets produced, being sure to "factor" in the truth about the carefully engineered stunts and sensationalized editing -- these contestants aren't necessarily as brave as they may appear.
