Parents need to know

Parents need to know that, despite its early primetime slot, this show isn't appropriate for younger kids. It revolves around a woman who talks to the dead. Most of the ghosts look like regular people, but some do look like decomposed bodies and may be scary for kids. That said, the overall tone of the show is oddly sentimental and eerie rather than frightening. Other than the concept of an afterlife, the program doesn't allude to religion in any way. Some mild language.

Families can talk about death and spirituality. Why does Melinda feel compelled to help the dead around her? Is her gift a blessing or a curse? David considers giving up being an EMT because he lost one of his patients. What would you do in that situation?

Message

Social Behavior:

The main character selflessly does good deeds for others.

Consumerism:

Drugs/Alcohol/Tobacco:

Violence

Large doses of suspense. Some ghosts (particularly in later episodes) can be scary, but overall the show is more sad than frightening.

Sex

Language

Fairly mild; mostly of the "damn," "hell," and "crap" variety, with a few uses of "bitch," "bastard," and the like.

What's the story?

Reviewed by Marjorie Kase

In GHOST WHISPERER, Jennifer Love Hewitt stars as Melinda Gordon, a woman with the ability to speak to "earthbound spirits." Although she tries hard to lead a normal life, Melinda finds it impossible due to the ghosts' constant cries for her help. Inevitably, her compassionate nature compels her to give in.

Is it any good?

2

Some of Melinda's encounters with spirits involve unpleasant/potentially scary sights -- like semi-decomposed bodies. But others aren't as serious or visually disturbing. For example, a nagging wife begs Melinda to tell her husband where she left their safe deposit key, a deceased mom becomes exasperated over her son ignoring a pretty girl, etc. Hewitt has helmed a few bombs -- from Time of Your Life to The Audrey Hepburn Story. But in this case, she does seem to have staying power.

Like the ghosts featured on the show, Ghost Whisperer is in a purgatory of its own. It can't seem to decide whether it's a supernatural thriller or a weepy sentimental drama. This obvious ploy by the show's producers to appeal to both the male and female demographics winds up being Ghost Whisperer's downfall. One minute you're crying, the next you're scared to turn around. The show comes off as uneven, underdeveloped, and void of satisfaction. And the plot line surrounding Melinda's EMT husband, Jim (David Conrad) is thin and trite -- he saves lives, she saves the dead.

This is a really good show! I just started watching it, wich means I missed most of the show's life, but I wish I had started watching it from the begining! I fully recomend this show to everyone ages 11+!

Great Show

Ghost Whisperer, Moonlight, Numbers - what a great lineup on Friday night! I can't wait for reruns to be over and the new season to begin. I like the whole idea that it's not the end when you die and if you have unfinished business, there's someone that can help tie things up. The whole "ball of light" thing isn't bad either!

Ghost whisperer is my favourite show ! it is very interesting and you can learn alot from it ! the characters are smart and fun and they make the show better . It has some violence in it and some of the ghosts can look very disturbing but overall it is a good show for teenagers and adults

I love this show!!!!

This is one of my favorite shows!! There are a few iffy things in it, such as some of the ghosts are bloody or decomposed, but most ghosts look just like an alive person. In some flashback scenes it shows how the person died which in some cases can be bloody or disturbing. I like scary things so none of this bothered me so I would say if you are 10+ and can handle a little blood you are fine on the gory part. Not much language is used but in each episode about 2 sware words are used. Some of the episodes could be confusing to some viewers. Melinda and her husband kiss alot but gets no more than that USUALLY. Some things jump out in parts but its not too bad, in one case Melinda is in a dream and a little girl has a skull face. I think this show would be fine for 10 or 11+.

Good Girl, Fights Bad Guys

A goofd person fights off ghosts that try to hurt her and she tries to help them pass on. But there is a lot of stange violence and lots of peril. Mild sexual content. There is not alot of langage but there is some hells and damns.

Although there are no real sexual situations, the attire of the main character Melinda are very reveling. She wears very low-cut shirts and dresses that show a lot of cleavage.

Not bad for a new show

I have watched the first two shows and, although it is not the greatest writing or acting, I've ended up crying at the end both times. The show could scare some kids because of the supernatural theme. All in all, the main character uses her powers to do good things for both the living and the dead and I think the stories are something many of us can relate to.

Not unique. Trying to mimic other "ghost" shows.

I hate that the Big4 networks cannot seem to create more shows with original topics. Seems like, if there is a show that is successful on one network one season, then they all jump on the bandwagon and you can just bet that there will be 3-5 other shows just like it next season. So, for originality, I'd score it a -2-. These producers make megabucks and you'd think they could come up with fresh programs; e.g. LOST, DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, both of which were introduced last season.

I was interested...

My friend watches it and told me to, it is a pretty good show, but it is like any other ghost show. Plus the last episode I saw was sort of stupid cause it took her forever to figure out why a ghost was haunting her friend, and i knew right off the bat, but the show is overall pretty good!
