Why We Rated This on for Ages 13 and Up

The good stuff

  • Messages:

Hayden is committed to his sport and wants to win, but he also notes that his family and friends are priorities in his life. He exhibits good sportsmanship when he loses and appreciates the many opportunities that racing has given him. The featured racers are primarily Caucasian males.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

Includes live-action footage of some tough motorbike crashes, but no injuries are shown.
  • Sex:

"Biker babes" at the racing venues wear skimpy outfits (shorts, midriff-baring tops, and tight dresses). Brief references to Hayden "being a player" with girls. Hayden is sometimes seen taking off his shirt while changing out of his racing outfit.
  • Language:

Frequent use of words like "damn" and "hell" stronger words (like "f--k") are bleeped.
  • Consumerism:

Some of Hayden's sponsors and their products -- including Michelin, Honda, Gas Jeans and Tissot Watches -- are featured. Red Bull, Bridgestone Tires, and Mazda logos also visible. PlayStation is prominently shown. The Hayden family releases a book; popular songs are heard during the show.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

MotoGP winners spray champagne on each other and on fans.

What Parents Need to Know

About The Kentucky Kid

Parents need to know that this mostly mild documentary-style reality series includes live-action footage of fast-paced MotoGP (motorcyle) racing. Some serious accidents are featured; many of them resulted in injuries, but the wounds themselves are never shown. Parents may need to remind kids that the featured riders are trained professionals who only race on professional courses. Expect some language (mostly "damn" and "hell"), with stronger words like "f--k" bleeped out.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about MTV's two styles of reality shows -- those like this one, which are more like real documentaries, or wild-and-crazy series like The Real World. Which do you like better? Why? Why do you think MTV continues to broadcast both kinds of series? Families can also discuss the sport of MotoGP racing. How is it different from other kinds of motorcycle races? Why is it more popular in Europe than the United States? What kind of skills do you need to become a professional racer? What are the dangers? How do racers get sponsors to offset their costs?
