Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 14–18

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

The show is devoid of parental influence, so teenage Kevin has only his lazy, sexually motivated, cool-conscious older brother to learn from. Most of the young adult characters are shallow and do only enough to get by in life, often lying and cheating.
  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

Guys and girls talk about "getting laid" female characters wear skimpy and revealing outfits; masturbation is mentioned. In one episode, an older brother wishes his younger brother a happy first date by giving him a condom. The next-door neighbors are a gay couple whose "relations" can sometimes be heard through the walls.
  • Language:

Words like "hell," "damn," and "ass" are commonplace, and some euphemisms for sex ("screw," "get laid") are used.
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

Social scenes in bars or at private parties include drinking and smoking, although it's limited to the over-21 crowd.

What Parents Need to Know

About Mission Hill

Parents need to know that this show satirizes the young-adult lifestyle in the big city, which means there's plenty of iffy content for younger viewers. Characters are one-dimensional and, on the whole, unmotivated, often drifting through life and jobs in typical slacker fashion. The show touches on mature themes like masturbation, sexual experiences (and lack thereof), and homosexual relationships, featuring a long-time male couple whose intensely up-and-down relationship is played for laughs. Younger viewers will miss much of the social context that lends itself to the humor of the show.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about the social behavior portrayed by the show's young adults. Are the irresponsible? How so? What might the repercussions of their actions be? Parents can discuss the importance of having goals. Why is it necessary to have a plan in life? How can that keep you motivated? What are your goals? How will you work toward them?
