Parents need to know
Families can talk about the various ways women are portrayed on the show -- and to what degree those portraits are accurate. After seeing Addison, Naomi, Violet, and Charlotte in action, which one do you admire the most? The least? Are these women's professional lives very different from their private lives? Parents and older teens who are Grey's fans can also compare the two shows. What themes and issues do they have in common? How are they different?
Message
Social Behavior:
Most characters are far from perfect, and the show's heroine is no exception. But their flawed choices and motivations usually steer them toward positive lessons.
Consumerism:
Brand names occasionally pop up, but the effect is subtle. In one scene, for example, a doctor is shown holding a box of McKesson surgical gloves with the logo clearly visible.
Drugs/Alcohol/Tobacco:
Adult characters are shown drinking alcohol in social situations, but usually in moderation.
Violence
Surgical procedures are sometimes shown in graphic detail, but things rarely get out-and-out gory.
Sex
Much like its parent program, this spin-off uses sexual tension and bedroom antics as devices for plot advancement. One character is obsessed with sex.
Language
"Ass" and "hell" are as strong as it gets.

What's the story?
Reviewed by Kari Croop
Lured away from the buzz of Seattle Grace Hospital by the promise of an idyllic private practice where doctors work with each other rather than against each other, noted neonatal surgeon Addison Forbes Montgomery (Kate Walsh) accepts a friend's invitation to join the staff of the Oceanside Wellness Center in Los Angeles. Of course, what Addison finds when she arrives is hardly what was advertised. PRIVATE PRACTICE's supporting cast of critically acclaimed actors includes Tony winner/Emmy nominee Audra McDonald as Naomi Bennett, a fertility specialist who owns a majority share of the practice and went to medical school with Addison; Emmy nominee Tim Daly as Pete Wilder, the charming homeopath who gave Addison a memorable smooch in Seattle; Golden Globe and Emmy nominee Amy Brenneman as Violet Turner, a dedicated psychiatrist; and Taye Diggs as Naomi's estranged ex-husband, internist Sam Bennett. And Paul Adelstein co-stars as pediatrician Cooper Freedman.
Is it any good?
Private Practice is a highly watchable show with a talented ensemble cast that actually lives up to the hype that's surrounded this Grey's Anatomy spin-off from the moment it was announced.
While the A-list casting and witty dialogue keep this fast-paced dramedy zipping along like a well-oiled machine, the show's dramatic moments -- which are usually rife with medical improbabilities and hokey music -- can tend toward the melodramtic. But that's a minor point compared to the show's considerable merits.
