Common Sense Note

Parents need to know that this live-action educational series is kid friendly. Kids will see first-hand how conservation officers preserve our natural resources, as well as how animals survive in their ecological habitat.

Families can talk about animal rights. What makes an animal an endangered species? What happens if an animal is removed from its natural habitat? How can you prepare for a natural disaster? How can we take better care of the planet? Would the animals in the show make good pets? Why or why not?

Common Sense Review

Reviewed By: Deirdre Sheppard

WILDLIFE JOURNAL offers viewers a first-hand look at both how conservation officers preserve America's natural resources and how animals live in their natural habitat. Each episode highlights various regions, their climates, and the animals who live there.

The series explores many facets of a conservation officer's job, including protecting the animals who live there and preparing for natural disasters. The show also delves into how an animal's environment is affected in the aftermath of traumatic natural disasters.

Wildlife Journal investigates the lives of endangered species, too. The conservation officers explain why a particular animal is endangered and what they need to do to safeguard the animal from extinction. Parents can use this example to talk to kids about how they can incorporate some of the conservation officers' duties into their everyday lives -- and explain why what the conservation officers do is so important to the animals and their resources.

The show offers plenty of educational benefits. Kids learn about different parts of the continent, identifying which kinds of wildlife exist in each region and why -- lessons that can spark discussion about why different animals need to live in certain climates in order to survive.

Fans of Wildlife Journal might also enjoy Caught in the Moment and Backyard Habitat.
