Common Sense Note

Kids younger than 7 will not understand the deeper meanings this well-intentioned -- but very violent -- show offers.

On one level this is a simple Frankenstein story but on another, this cartoon (if you watch with your kids over 7) can be a great jumping off point for discussing tolerance, sympathy for those who are different, appropriate and inappropriate expressions of anger, and even how a kid deals with fears of terrorism.

Common Sense Review

Cyclops, Jean Gray, Wolverine and more. Mutants are an underclass that are always on the verge of persecution. The messages of the need for tolerance of those who are different will not be lost on your kids if you spend a half hour and watch this with them. The centerpiece of each half hour show is usually a good versus evil battle with the mutants taking the good side. You don't have to scratch too far below the surface to get to the real messages of the need to understand those who look different -- that just because someone looks weird doesn't mean that he or she doesn't have his or her own super powers. The mutants are sympathetic and exist as a higher moral order even though they are often shown as fallible. It's great for kids to see their message of tolerance but the show definitely gets their attention through its numerous and very pyrotechnic battle scenes. Young kids won't be scared but will miss the nutrient values you will be able to discuss with your older ones.

Older kids may want to check out the live-action blockbuster trilogy, beginning with X-Men.
