Parents need to know that this fashion-oriented reality series highlights both the creative and business skills needed to create and promote a successful fashion retail line. It features lots of designers and design labels (Norma Kamali, Marchesa) as well as representatives from Elle Magazine, Nordstroms, Bergdorf-Goodman, and Neiman Marcus. Words like "hell" are sometimes audible. Younger kids may find it a little dry, but fashion-loving teens might enjoy it.
ALL ON THE LINE is a reality doc featuring celebrity stylist and Elle Magazine creative director Joe Zee as he helps struggling designers save their clothing lines. The fashion expert works with formerly successful designers whose clothing are no longer relevant in today’s cutting-edge fashion industry. Zee offers creative and marketing advice to re-inspire them to rework their designs and business strategies. He also arranges meetings with potential buyers in hopes that the designers can turn their failing businesses around.
The series offers an interesting and rather unglamorous look into what goes into being a successful retail designer. It highlights the need for designers to balance creativity with strong business savvy, and underscores the importance of being open-minded and flexible in order to keep up with and impact changing fashion trends. The importance of being professional and self-confident at all times is also noted.
Despite occasional moments of drama (usually brought on by a designer’s unwillingness to take constructive advice) the overall show is pretty mild. It will definitely appeal to fashion and design buffs. But it also offers some interesting lessons about what it really takes to break into the fashion industry, and market a successful fashion line.
Families can talk about working in the fashion industry. How hard is it to balance a designer’s inspiration and artistry with the pressures of the retail business? Have iconic designers like Coco Chanel always been limited by the demands of the business world? How do retail designers like Isaac Mizrahi manage to successfully sell their retail lines while staying true to their creative aesthetic?
Is the fashion industry only about consumerism, or is there something else more to it? Do you think this series is about promoting Joe Zee, or about promoting Elle Magazine as well as the clothing brands he is trying to save?
