What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this show about househunting tends to feature very grand houses that few people can afford, even at the significantly reduced prices. While not mentioned specifically, it's often implied that the homes are on the market because they were foreclosed on -- meaning that another family lost their home, which could be a sensitive issue for some families in the current economic climate. But other than that, there's nothing here kids can't watch -- though chances are they won't really want to.

  • The show promotes saving to achieve what you want. In one scene, one of the realtors leading the tour teases a child about starting his savings now so that he can buy a house when he's an adult.

What's the story?

DEALS ON THE BUS follows along as prospective home buyers go on a series of bus tours put on by real estate agents who are attempting to sell "bargain" houses in a down market. Many are quite grand -- and the reason that so many of them are selling for far below earlier prices is that they're bank-owned (i.e. foreclosures).

Is it any good?

If you love looking at homes for sale, you'll love this show. It's all about the houses, which is why the grander ones seem to be featured. The individual buyers' stories are interesting, but they really don't say much of importance. There is an element of sadness in that the reason that many of the homes are selling for less than half of their previous value is because of the troubled economy.

That said, for those who have been waiting to buy, this is an ideal time -- and the show reflects that hopefulness, not to mention the confidence that prices will, eventually, go up again.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about what shows like this can teach people about buying a home. Ask your kids if they would use the same criteria to choose their homes as the people on the show do. What did you learn from watching? Do you think the show intends to be informative or just entertaining?
