This show has potential. I am entering the field of psychology and find the overall plot fascinating, from that standpoint. The acting is ok. However, the excessive use of violence/gore and sexuality makes it unwatchable. My husband and I are in our mid-20's and stopped watching at the 3rd season because the gore and sex were so prevalent. I've heard it gets even worse as the seasons go on. People who say their teens or 11 year-olds can watch this are, in my opinion, insane. I would never subject anyone to this show, whether child, teen or adult. Pass.
This show is aimed for adult enterainment. So if you are a parent who is an idiot and lets your kids/.kid sit and view this show the kids got more than one issue. Its all about being a parent who pays attention to what is being viewed by kids in the home. This is a very strange show, done well. Its unique ans thats what makes it work. Dexter is a good man/killer! HAHAHA.......But no kids don't watch this~
Definitely not for kids. Parents Beware! Great Grown-Up Watch, though.
Dexter is definitely not a kids show. It's a great story of a monster trying to be something beside a monster, engaging, thought provoking, even beautiful... but it's something that's too complicated, off-center, violent and unapologetic for kids. The only reasons I can see showing it to someone fifteen and up are these: either your very mature older teen has asked to see it and you think they're ready to tackle complete moral ambiguity on their own, or your very mature older teen has said horrible things about the mentally ill and you want to remind them that even the sickest monsters are people with feelings, too. Otherwise, keep the kids away!
This is simply an excellent series. Very macabre subject matter. Excellent writing. How else can you explain the curious empathy you develop towards this killer. Nothing any child should be watching. Michael C. Hall couldn't be more different from his character on SIx Feet Under.
It's on HBO, so expect tons of sex, violence and profanity. I've been watching it since it first aired. It's a very good show with great preformances. I think it is for the most part appropriate for ages 14 and up. The DVD is rated 14A in Canada.
Death Note can't go and to by melk out at the store without something coming up and staeling and raeping its stuff. This stole the premise of killing the guize and Twilight stole teh apple. This is vary childish show and vary ripoff.
Death Note (manga)-2003
Dexter (book)-2004
Twilight (not even a book just awful)-2006
Dexter is rated TV-MA for graphic language, graphic sexuality/nudity, and strong violent images.
*NOTE: Unlike the TV-MA dramas on FX, this show actually does contain graphic uncensored nudity and pervasive F-bombs.
Great show that is the epitome of great acting. Fine for mature teens.
Listen, I'm 17 and I have been watching this show since it originally aired (it just finished it's fourth season) and I think that it is by far the best tv show I have ever seen! Now, it has copious amounts of violence, language, and nudity (which becomes more graphic as the seasons progress) and if you have children that you know aren't going to be influenced by the content, it is a fantastic show that has some of the best acting and story lines that I have ever seen. Also, the language, violence, etc. don't always seem that outrageous; the reason being that it fits the characters that use it. It's not as if a 12 year old girl is swearing at the top of her lungs- it's done by middle aged cops and detectives working for the Miami Metro Homicide division, so I would probably be appauled if they didn't use that type of language. Uh, let's see... the only other real concern parents might have is the fact that the show basically calls you to question your own sense of morals, in that you want to sympathize with a serial killer even though he is, after all, a killer. All-in-all, this show is fantastic and your kids probably see just about as much nudity & violence as they would in an average, high-budget horror movie, and the language that they most likely hear in their high school enviornment (I know I do). This show is perfectly appropriate for mature teens ages 15 and up, and make your own call on the "maturity" aspect.
Possibly appropriate for 18 and older, but parents, if your kids are younger than that DON'T LET THEM WATCH IT! The violence isn't the problem, although it is pretty graphic. It is the sex and language that is appalling for young teens. My opinion is that this is for adults only.
based on a book. usually that says enough for a show. but this series is amazing i just love it. it gets kinda mature at times with the whole killing and the free-flying language, and sexual content, but i got hooked and i cant get enough of it. for kids or teens, id say watch it with the 'rents. i do. and they like the show as much as i do. the parents may want to talk to their kids about why dexter kills people and it makes him look good, but who am i to tell parents how to raise their kids
The character Dexter is not a role model and he admits it repeatedly throughout the series. He is a damaged as a child by the horrific murder of his mother, which is the trigger for being a serial killer. This show isn't for young kids at all, and younger teens shouldn't watch it without parents present, but I believe most are mature enough to comprehend that this is fiction. There is just as much, if not more gore, cursing, and sex in the average "slasher/scary" movie. If this show was a movie, it would be rated R. The story lines and writing on this show are very well written and the characters have great depth.
Based on the first season of the program "Dexter" is an extremely original, entertaining but disturbingly morally wayward adult program on the Showtime network. Parents, this is not a program rated TV-MA just for the adult content (i.e.: f--k flies freely, deranged sexual content including nudity, and disturbingly glorified violence) but it is also rated "mature" because of the unsettling overtones in the series. This is not a show watched for the faint of heart. It is watched out of curiousity and once you're hooked on the storyline it doesn't let go. Watch if you like movies such as "Mr. Brooks" or shows such as "The Shield", but if not that then watch out because you're either in for a surprise in that you've found a new favorite show or one in which your stomach is turning over in disgust of the strange thematic elements that riddle this show like the blood drops that shower the crime scenes. I give this show a 5/5 star rating for its originality. AGES 17+ ONLY!
One shouldn't (I hope) support the means that the title character pursues. However, the ends appear ultimately noble in nature... once the not-so-politically correct motives are adequately understood (which is the concern of this drama).
Robin Hood "robbed the rich to aid the poor." Dexter dispatches strictly evil individuals out of an inherent need to extinguish, which, in the process, ultimately aids society.
It's not revenge in the least, but a necessity for him to continue existing. He may perhaps be deemed a serial killer, but a "serial killer of serial killers," especially one that abides by a code of morality far more keen than ours, does not seem apt for condemnation.
I am a parent/teacher and honestly find this show completely enthralling, but would definitely advise parents to watch WITHOUT their children due to the violence, drug/alcohol usage, sexual content and offensive language. Mature adults and teens ONLY!
Well I recently purchased Showtime and my son saw a commercial for this show and said "Mwommy Can I pweeze watsh dat?" I said, "are you sure, It looks a little too little kiddish" "Nwo Mwommy! Mwe wanna watsh dat nwow!" He is 11 and loves this show, even it is a little babyish sometimes!
