Why We Rated This on for Ages 8 and Up

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

The show is intended to entertain rather than educate, but there are some nice takeaway life lessons.
  • Messages:

The show emphasizes the importance of family and friendship, and the guys learn positive (if obvious) lessons about staying grounded and appreciating what really matters in life.
  • Role models:

Despite their celebrity status, the brothers and their parents strive for a "normal" existence at home and school. They're unassuming and unaffected by the throngs of young girls clamoring for their autograph everywhere they go. Girls often act silly around them (stuttering, giggling, even fainting), but the guys quickly put them at ease.

What to watch out for

  • Violence & scariness:

    Not an issue.
  • Sexy stuff:

Some mild flirting; lots of female fans have massive crushes on the three guys -- and they're sometimes chased by throngs of adorers.
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

Obviously the Jonases are part of a mega-marketing franchise (clothing, music, books, etc.), but there's no direct product pitch in the show.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

This review of JONAS was written by Emily Ashby

Parents need to know that this upbeat comedy series -- which will premiere on the Disney Channel in May 2009 -- stars the Jonas Brothers as members of an ultra-popular teen rock band. While the show isn't necessarily based on the guys' real-life selves, their characters do have the same first names, and the "fictional" band's name is Jonas, making publicity for the Jonas Brothers an unavoidable byproduct of the series. That said, there aren't any direct marketing efforts embedded in the show, and the content is as clean and kid-friendly as fans -- and parents -- have come to expect from the trio.

More on JONAS

What’s the Story?

In JONAS, the real-life Jonas Brothers star as Kevin, Joe, and Nick Lucas, the three sibling stars of fictitious rock band Jonas (named after the street they live on ... of course). The down-to-earth brothers do their best to shrug off their teen idol status and keep life as normal as possible, but with throngs of adoring fans everywhere they go, even everyday tasks like taking out the garbage prove challenging. All of this makes for some pretty crazy antics, but fortunately for the guys, their biggest fans are their supportive parents; their younger brother, Frankie; and long-time friend Stella (Chelsea Staub) -- who are all quick to bring them back to reality when they get too big for their britches.

Is It Any Good?

Jonas, Lucas, Midas -- no matter what name the trio uses, the result seems destined to be golden. It speaks to the Jonases' immense likeability that they can star in a show that's so entwined with their real-life selves (they don't even change their names, for heaven's sake) and still not come across as self serving. On the contrary, their charm and chemistry are bound to win over viewers who aren't already on the Jonas bandwagon.

"Fictional" band or no, it's impossible to believe that the show bears no resemblance to the brothers' real life, since their reputation for kid-friendly entertainment is well known, and the show's content is equally worry-free. Sure, it's a bit on the sanitized side, but anything else would be a huge break from character. The series makes light of everything from typical family mishaps (ruining one of Mom's priceless possessions, for example) to the guys' woes over their celebrity status, and each episode underscores the benefits of strong family and friendship ties. Even parents may find themselves engaged by the brothers' easy way with comedy -- and with each other.

    Cute show

It's a pretty cute show. My 6 year old isn't a big fan of Disney, so she won't watch it, but my 7 year old (Alexis) and 4 year old (Railegh) eat this stuff up! They curl up on the couch on the Disney Channel premiere nights and love watching JONAS! Pretty cute...
