Parents need to know that while this decidedly "pro green" series -- which highlights ways that people can make eco-friendly choices without sacrificing the quality of their lives and/or businesses -- is pretty mild overall, there's occasional drinking (usually during a meal). Older tweens and teens interested in environmental issues will find it interesting, but most kids probably won't find it too exciting.
THE LAZY ENVIRONMENTALIST highlights easy solutions for living a greener lifestyle. In each episode, radio personality/author Josh Dorfman looks for simple, realistic ways for communities and business owners to lower their carbon footprint without sacrificing quality, convenience, or style. With the help of various experts, Dorfman explores ways to make more eco-friendly food choices, consume less fuel, and reduce waste. He also looks for environmentally sound substitutes for things that may look, taste, and/or function as well as their less-green counterparts. After folks test and discuss his findings, he leaves them to make the greener choices that work for them.
Despite its title, this mild series actually works pretty hard to underscore the idea
that living a greener lifestyle doesn't require a lot sacrifice -- simply an awareness of what we're consuming and a willingness to change some less-than-ideal habits. It also demonstrates how people can find ways to be more environmentally friendly and still easily support their
personal and business needs.
Although the show is a promotional vehicle for the host's pro-green agenda, The Lazy Environmentalist is remarkably non-judgmental. Dorfman himself points out eco-friendly alternatives that don't really work for him (like driving around hot Los Angeles without air conditioning), though they may click for others. Ultimately, the show's overall message is clear: Any green changes you make -- no matter how small they are -- will make a major positive difference to our planet.
Families can talk about how the media educates people about positive lifestyle changes. Do you think shows like this help inspire people to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle, or are they just a trendy form of entertainment? Families can also discuss ways that they can live a greener life. Are there habits that you can break or things you can substitute in order to reduce your carbon footprint? Is there anything that you wouldn't be willing to change?
