It amazes me how many science stories she tells us after watching Magic School Bus. I don't know how to break it to her that real school isn't quite going to be like Ms. Frizzle's classroom!
My five-year old son loves this show. And his two-year old sister will watch it with him without complaint. He finds it interesting, is thrilled when it comes on TV, and he's always telling me about things he learned on the show.
I remember watching this show all the time when I was a kid. It was the best on PBS!!! It kicked Athur's butt. Only Wishbone parralled in greatness. I can still remember some of the stuff it taught me as a kid. I'd even watch it today!
My son is absolutely bonkers about this bus! How many five year olds can tell you what an "esophagus" or "villi" is? And then turn around and tell you everything you SHOULD have learned in school about the planets? For those kids interested in science (or those who need a little push perhaps), this show has it all. I wish I had Ms. Frizzle back when I was in school! Awesome series!
Magic School Bus is an awesome show. My oldest is almost 8 years old now, and we still have to watch it before school starts. He knows so much more about science and is so much more interested in it since he started watching it. They show how much you can learn about so many topics, and help prompt interest in science and the world around us, more than just video games and mindless non-thought-provoking tv programs.
My 4 and 6 year old LOVE LOVE LOVE this show. My 6 year old loves science and this has been her favorite show since she was around 4. She begs me to record it now that she's in school all day. It's a great intro into science and its concepts. The consistancy of the characters help too. I know I even have learned some things from this show.
I remember watching this show as a kid and loving it. I'm going to have to go on to youtube and see if I can find it.
Random Alert!:
When ever I listen to the B-52s I get nostalgic for the Magic School Bus and I don't know why. Weird huh?
I am very conservative regarding what I let my kid watch--every movie must be screened before he sees it to be sure it's ok. The magic school bus meets every criterion--there is no sex, no violence, no massively adult themes (like racism or nazis) AND it's educational AND it's fun. My son loves the show, and so do I.
This is a great show. Some are of more interest than others, naturally.
My son was 2 1/2 when my sister retired from teaching, she gave us an old video tape of the show (Inside Ralphie who is home sick). Insisting he wanted to watch it, we finally put it on. I think he was mostly impressed with the opening music and graphics. A few months later, he came down with a dreadful flu. He requested that video! It was his chicken soup (since he couldn't keep anything down)! Some shows are way above him, and he has no interest (molecules, gravity, light)..turn it off after the opening! Shows about dino's, lava, undersea, body's, tree roots, bees...ah, concepts he can relate to!
Even toddler's and pre-schoolers like this show!
...my five-year-old understands several concepts she would not otherwise. She explained accurately last week that her fort was not staying up because the "blankets and the chairs do not have enough friction" for example. Love the show.
