A Lot or a Little?
The parents' guide to what's in this TV show.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Pantheon is an animated science fiction thriller full of suspense and action. The show is based on Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author Ken Liu's book The Hidden Girl and Other Stories, and has a pervasively ominous vibe. A girl is bullied online (and briefly physically), and at one point is encouraged to kill herself. There are flashbacks of the main character visiting her terminally ill father in the hospital. A couple of girls get into a fight in the school bathroom. From there, violence includes kidnapping, an emotionally abusive husband and father, and full-scale battle scenes. Language is mature: "s--t," "WTF," "bitch," "hell," "goddamn," and the like.

What's the Story?
In PANTHEON, a young woman begins receiving messages from an unknown number that claims to be her deceased father. Trying to uncover the truth, she stumbles upon a larger conspiracy involving the singularity.
Is It Any Good?
The Big Brother type of conspiracy behind this technological thriller feels familiar, but there are just enough twists to keep it from being stale. Pantheon is part Homecoming, part The Matrix yet still manages to maintain a fresh tone. The main characters are likable, the writing smart, the action fast-paced, and there's even some heart to the story. Plus, the animated format means there are no limits on what can be done. Here's the rare thriller that family members of a variety of ages can enjoy together. Even if adult cartoons aren't usually your thing, with an impressive cast that includes William Hurt, Daniel Dae Kim, Ron Livingston and Maude Apatow, this one is worth a look.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how Maddie's classmate bullies her and sends her some horrible messages in the first episode of Pantheon. Discuss with your kids how they can deal with a situation like this in real life by seeking help from a trusted adult.
How would this show be different if it was live action instead of animated? Do you think it would be better or worse? Why?
Maddie's father tells her that people of all ages believe in conspiracies because they're afraid of death or danger. Does that make sense to you? Why or why not?
