What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this travel series, which features a comedian with cerebral palsy, has a strong empowering message about the abilities of the disabled. It contains some very mild sexual innuendo (like references to things being sexy), very occasional bleeped language, and a few scenes where alcohol is visible or being consumed. Lots of local venues and companies are plugged.

  • There's a strong empowering message about what people with disabilities can do. The show demonstrates that wheelchair-bound or other disabled folks can travel, find joy, and have new and varied experiences. There's an emphasis on having fun, exploring, and appreciating all the world has to offer.
  • Zach shows the public that being disabled does not have to keep him from doing exciting things and pursuing his dreams. He's got a great attitude and appears sincere.
  • Not applicable.
  • Occasionally things (like root beer floats) are described as "sexy." Zach experiments with things like speed dating.
  • Contains very occasional bleeped language, like "s--t."
  • Local establishments from each region, like Caroline's Comedy Club and Andaz Hotel are featured.
  • Occasionally Zach visits a local bar and tries a local beer. Visits to comedy clubs show patrons with cocktails on the table.

What's the story?

ROLLIN' WITH ZACH is a reality travel show featuring comedian Zach Anner, winner of Your OWN Show: Oprah's Search for the Next TV Star. Anner, who has cerebral palsy and is wheelchair bound, visits cities from coast to coast in order to see the sites, meet new people, and try five activities that the city is known for. From rock climbing to performing at a comedy club, he sees lots of exciting things and meets lots of great people along the way. Things don't always go as planned, but his positive attitude and sense of humor helps him get through one fun and interesting challenge at a time.

Is it any good?

The series offers a fun and lighthearted look at some of the interesting things that cities around the country have to offer. But the real draw to the show is Zach himself, whose humor and easy-going personality adds a sincere quality to the show, especially when problems arise with his wheelchair or he is unable to perform tasks like other people.

Granted, one has to wonder if some of the activities Zach participates in are rigged to meet his specific needs because he is hosting the show. But his overall attitude is extremely positive, and his message about the joys of traveling, as well as living life to the fullest, is definitely empowering.

Explore, discuss, enjoy

  • Families can talk about living with a disability. What kind of challenges do people who use wheelchairs or who can't see, hear, or move easily face on a daily basis? How does the media depict people who face these challenges? Does this show break stereotypes about the disabled and what they can and cannot accomplish?

  • Why do you think Zach won his own show? What makes him an appealing character?
