What parents need to know

Parents need to know that since this good-natured reality series focuses on the mostly male clients and employees of a Queens, NY, barbershop, it's rife with fraternity house-style humor and conversation. The barbers tease each other mercilessly, but they respect each other, too.

  • The barbers are constantly ribbing each other, but it's ultimately all in good fun.
  • Not applicable.
  • The guys in the barbershop are in their '20s and '30s, so it's not surprising that their conversations often contain sexual innuendo.
  • Strong curse words are bleeped out; un-bleeped language includes "mad as hell," "ass," etc.
  • Since shop owner Cory Rooney is a music producer, hip-hop stars and their songs are a main conversation topic; some even stop by the shop.

What's the story?

`MTV2's reality series THE SHOP is like a real-life version of Ice Cube's hit movie Barbershop. Viewers go on a behind-the-scenes tour of a Jamaica, New York, barbershop where neighborhood men come to get a cut, catch up on local gossip, and critique aspiring rappers and singers. Barbers Bobby, Deb, Pop, Teddy, Tim, and Van steal the show at Mr. Rooney's Barbershop, which is owned by Cory Rooney, a successful music producer who's worked with the likes of Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Lopez, and Destiny's Child. In each episode, in between giving their clients buzz cuts and trims, the barbers shoot the breeze on pop culture trends, the latest rap and hip-hop couples, the places they've been, and the people with whom they socialize. They also welcome Rooney's colleagues (in one episode they hung out with local celebrity Fat Joe) and entertain their customers with critiques of budding rappers who come to the store to audition.

Is it any good?

While some of the banter can get bawdy (in one episode the barbers joked about the pros and cons of hiring a prostitute) and dozens of curses are bleeped out, The Shop is a feel-good look at the community that gave rise to the rap and hip-hop industries. And it's evident that amid all the good-natured ribbing, the guys (and gal!) at the barbershop are friends who, in the end, respect each other.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about what role teasing plays in friendships. Is it OK to make fun of your friends if they know you really care about and respect them? How do you make that clear? How do you know when you've gone too far? Another discussion topic might be having goals and what it takes to attain them. How do you keep pursuing a dream when it seems like it might never happen?

WOW WHAT A SHOW
the shop is a good show and it is cool when we see the stars on the show. Tim is really bad as a manager, he should learn to not put up with what teddy and van say to him. I liked the one show where they let people rap and sing in front of cory for a deal and i am a strugglin rappa myself so i wished that that could of been me and i wish i could talk to cory about a deal but i can't. overall the show is great
