What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this series encourages preschoolers' curiosity about the world around them and promotes finding answers through hands-on exploration. Sid and his friends are always excited to learn new things and solve pint-size scientific mysteries like "Why are my shoes shrinking?" and "Why do bananas get mushy?" The show -- which is co-produced by The Jim Henson Company -- introduces kids to the basics of scientific study, but they'll be so busy enjoying the show's use of song, dance, and humor that they may not even realize they're learning.

Positive messages: Sid uses his instinctive curiosity to guide his explorations of the world around him. He asks lots of questions, and the adults in his life -- parents, teacher, and grandma -- encourage his queries and help him find answers through hands-on discoveries. Sid's friends are diverse, imaginative, and resourceful.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids

Families can talk about the kinds of things that kids like to learn about. Kids: Where do you get your information? What places can you visit to learn more? Which of the scientific methods that Sid learns about have you used? How do scientists use tools to help them discover things? What tools do you use? Families can take the opportunity to check out local museums, zoos, and aquariums to inspire their kids' interest in the sciences.

What's the story?

What's the story?

SID THE SCIENCE KID introduces kids to the basics of science through the eyes of a young boy named Sid (voiced by Drew Massey), whose insatiable curiosity about the world around him leads to discoveries of all kinds. Each day Sid and his friends tackle a new question that's sure to resonate with their young viewers; episodes have explored why snowmen melt, why leaves fall in autumn, why teeth are different shapes, and more. Under the guidance of his parents, grandmother, and caring teacher Miss Susie (Donna Kimball), Sid uses scientific techniques like observation, measurement, and data collection to discover answers to his many questions.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

This enjoyable educational series fills a gap in preschool programming, which has more often tended to focus on developing kids' readiness for reading and math. With Sid as their guide, kids will be inspired to ask question as a means of discovering new things, and they'll want to make observations and test their own scientific theories. The show's dual settings -- Sid's school and his home -- remind young viewers that the scientific world is all around us, waiting to be explored. With some encouragement from parents, there's no end to the educational opportunities that could be inspired by Sid's curiosity.

And, learning aside, the show is sure to be a hit with kids because it's got plenty of music, dance, and all-around good fun. Preschoolers will enjoy aspiring comedian Sid's silly antics and the jokes that he and his friends make up (they're always related to the episode's theme). It's so entertaining that parents might find themselves drawn to watch as well -- and those who do may well learn a few things, too.

a great show
Great show about kids exploring the world! My daughter loves it and learns a lot from it and then we discuss all the things she learned and do our own experiments!

Well...
I do not like this show at all. The characters are very poorly decorated(I guess that's the word). Other people may like this show, but I hate it. The people creep me out.

My son loves Sid the Science kid! I think the idea is wonderful. Using real people and family with grandmother, father, siblings, friends and a teacher is excellent choice to teach kids to love grown ups. I think it is better than using dragons, dinasaurs etc. One thing though I don't really like, which is not that important, I can't stand some of the voices like the grandmother. Drives me up the wall sometimes. And I think it is too fast the voices too annoying! but other than that I think the questions are very age appropriate, and the ideas are wonderful. If they can only change a little bit if the hype!

Sid The Inferior Henson Creation
As with the disappointing Dinosaur Train, Brian Henson insists on wasting his time rather than continuing his father's legacy of Good Entertainment. Watch Fraggle Rock instead!

Creepy
Hated it. Compared to Sean The Sheep it's horrible. Yes this is better than Sesame Street and whatnot but this is still very strange how the voices, characters and overall theme is forced happiness all the time. So forced it's surreal and fake and I couldn't get passed it. Wouldn't want my daughter being this fake either. Intention was good, execution failed. As stated earlier, it creeps me out too!

Perfect for preschool kids
This is a great show -- educational and entertaining. It encourages learning through science and figuring out answers to questions. I will say that my son likes this show a lot more now (at 4) than he did a year ago. I love that it helps me explain "why" to some of the questions he asks. Some of my favorite episodes: why we wash our hands to keep from spreading germs, how the sun helps plants grow, how the water comes out of our faucet, etc. Good topics. Great show.

ok
My son loves Sid, but I can't stand the characters voices, I wish they can something about it, espcially the grandmother!!! I don't understand why she has to talk like that, I don't think it is normal. and the kids voices and characters are not normal too. but my 4 year old loves it

Amazing
One of the best children's shows out there. So many elements of it make it a cut above the other fare. First, the depiction of the early childhood classroom is incredible. Teacher Susie is an ideal teacher for this age. Preschool teachers should watch her for professional development. She is dynamic, respectful, gentle, positive, and delivers lessons with great energy and creativity. She responds to the interests of the kids and capitalizes on teachable moments. The students are incredibly, and humorously, realistic. The show captures the energy, enthusiasm, and at times, chaos, of the early childhood classroom. I love the fact that one child is clearly hyperactive and the teacher treats him with respect and positivity. He is not sitting in the corner, but actively included and given room to be himself. The lessons represent the natural curiousity of this age group, and provide an excellent introduction to topics that parents can follow up on with conversation and books. And one of the best, though little noticed, aspects of the show is that Sid has interracial parents. How refreshing that this is included, not as the subject of the show, but as just another feature of Sid's life. We need so much more of that depicted in preschool television. And for the folks complaining about Grandma's voice -- I don't get it! I adore her. The love and affection she displays for Sid is wonderful, and she is perhaps the only elderly figure on children's tv who is presented as a dynamic, vital individual. Can't sing the praises of this show enough.

You learn something new every show.
I like the realness of the show... They are safety concerned. They use booster seats in the car, safety glasses, helmets, etc. I love that they use big words.

Good Stuff
I would love something like Sid that focused on letters and numbers. Still, although my 2 year old couldn't possibly understand the bigger concepts of each episode, the singing, dancing, and loving behavior between the characters makes it appealing and I think not detrimental for a 2-year-old. Great digital puppetry and designs, doesn't have the jerky and cheap look of a lot of other 3D cartoons. Overall, this seems to be replacing Sesame Street in our house - that show also seems more concerned with teaching concepts far beyond the grasp of it's target audience, with the characters getting louder and more obnoxious.

My kid and I love Sid the Science Kid
I have been very selective about what I'll let my daughter watch, and she watched NO TV until she was about 2.5. She LOVES this, and I enjoy it, too!
