A Lot or a Little?
The parents' guide to what's in this TV show.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that the South African, soccer-themed Supa Strikas: Rookie Season, a prequel to the Supa Strikas series, features positive messages about teamwork, sporting conduct, perseverance, and reaching for your dreams. Family, the disappearance of a parent, and the loss of a friendship are also major themes. Unsporting behavior is not rewarded, but on occasion folks are shown yelling and breaking things out of anger. There's some effort to present a diverse cast, but it's predominantly male. The UNICEF is featured in different episodes, and is involved in the show's production.

What's the Story?
SUPA STRIKAS: ROOKIE SEASON, a prequel in the popular Supa Strikas franchise, tells the story of the Supa Strikas' lead striker. Shakes, along with his best friend Skarra, are stars at their local football (aka soccer) club, and have dreams of playing soccer for the Super League. When given the opportunity to show off their skills to a Supa Strikas scout, Shakes, Skarra, and other hopefuls train hard and must play well to impress. But there are unexpected challenges along the way, and Shakes finds himself having to make important decisions, some of which will change his life and the lives of those closest to him forever.
Is It Any Good?
The lively and fun series, which is based on a South African comic book, continues the franchise's tradition of teaching valuable life lessons. While some of what is being shown is adapted for North American viewers (starting with the use of the word "soccer" vs. "football"), it continues its tradition of underscoring the importance of teamwork, sporting conduct, and perseverance while offering lots of soccer-playing action and occasional goofy moments. But part of this backstory also reveals the breakdown of a close friendship, which leads to negative interactions later. Meanwhile, despite some attempts at being more gender- and ability-inclusive, most of the featured players are male. As a result, Supa Strikas: Rookie Season will likely appeal more to young, male soccer fans than young female players.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about why the Supa Strikas put so much emphasis on each player's character strengths in addition to their athletic skills. Does it make them a better team?
Why does Supa Strikas: Rookie Season feature so few female players? What messages does their lack of representation on the series send about women who play soccer?
