What's the Story?
Based on the graphic novel of the same name, SUPER CROOKS is an anime series about a thief with superpowers. As a teenager, Johnny Bolt (Jonah Scott) lived with his mom and hung out with his friend Tom (Kellen Goff) watching (the fictitious) Union of Justice on TV. When he discovers that he can control electricity with his mind, Johnny decides that he's going to be the town's local superhero. But things don't go as planned, and soon Johnny opts for a life of petty crime. Now the adult Johnny (voiced by Kenjiro Tsuda), after five years in prison, is planning to settle down in San Francisco with his girlfriend Kasey (Maaya Sakamoto). But when a friend gets in trouble with the mob, Johnny pulls together a crew of super crooks and devises a plan to rob the wealthiest supervillain on the planet to help pay off his debts. It's also a chance to make them all rich. But things get complicated, and soon the whole enterprise becomes bigger than they imagined.
Is It Any Good?
The dark, humor-filled Japanese series, which is set in the Jupiter's Legacy world, follows the sensitive, but attitude-filled Johnny Bolt as he sets out on one final heist. It's full of the fantasy violence and adult-oriented activities one comes to expect from these types of series, and if you're not familiar with the story world, the narrative can get a little confusing. Nonetheless, Johnny, Kasey, and the rest of the crew are likable, especially when you realize that they are trying to break a cycle of corruption designed to profit from both their illegal behavior and their incarceration. Overall, Super Crooks is a fun watch, but one that invites you to root for some of the bad guys.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the appeal of anime shows. Why are they so popular? What are some of the elements of the genre that make them unique?
Is it appropriate to root for the success of some of the Super Crooks cast, even if what they are doing is illegal? Does knowing where Johnny Bolt comes from, and what led to his decision to become a supervillian, make liking him easier?
