A Lot or a Little?
The parents' guide to what's in this TV show.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that The Low Tone Club is a Colombian TV series that focuses on teenage students and a new teacher at a renowned music academy. Characters are largely one-dimensional, and melodramatic plotlines center on teenage relationships, school politics, a rising pop star's career, and an arrest. There's a short flashback to a deadly car crash. A small group of elitist students regularly attempts to ostracize another student with no consequences.

What's the Story?
LOW TONE CLUB begins on a new professor's first day at Ultranova Academy, an illustrious Colombian music school run by a celebrated, but not always compassionate, aging pop star. Every year the director picks five top-performing music students to form what he calls the "High Tones." When the mysterious new staff member starts to challenge the way things have always been done, previously passed over students will finally find their chance to shine. But what will happen when their new champion's past catches up with him?
Is It Any Good?
Fast-paced from the beginning, this Colombian teen drama soon becomes exhausting. As the central foes in The Low Tone Club, Director Kramer (Julian Arango) is a pitch-perfect buffoon and Professor Molina (portrayed by beloved Colombian pop star Carlos Vives) is a soft-spoken leader with a quirky musicality that transcends language barriers. Pre-teen viewers will quickly be drawn in by the lively music academy setting, but predictable plotlines and unaddressed unkind behavior soon detract from the show's positive themes of staying true to oneself and fighting injustice. Ultimately, the lack of character development and overemphasis on melodrama leaves little room for emotional depth and cultural insight, making this series utterly forgettable.
