The thing I don't really like about Common Sense is that they do not update their materials. This show has been out 3 years now and their reviews are based on the first 3 episodes of season 1. This show has gotten remarkably more appropriate. In the first season Jeremy was a drug addict due to the fact his parents died. However by Season 2 he stopped completely. Their was a little sexual content in season 1 but they've toned it down to just kissing, and shirt less men. The only thing their is would be violence. There is and always will be blood and death on this show. But you have to know that kids who are mature enough to know that vampires aren't real can handle this show. I'm always concerned as to what my kids are reading or watching, so I always screen these things. And I believe this show is fine for 13 year olds and up.
this show is a little violent but it is a vampire show so obviously it will be violent but its not unnecessarily so there is some drinking but its usually in moderation which is a good message since most high schoolers do drink and while they do not talk about safe sex on the show they have never mentioned unsafe sex (stuff like "i don't use condom cause it doesn't feel as good" or "the pill makes you get fat") the characters that use drugs are looked down on by the other characters
This show is not gory at all, not when compared to things like Buffy and Supernatural. Okay, you have the heart removal and decapacitation, but there are issues other than violence.
My 11 year old watches this show and is a faithful fan. One thing to note is Stefan's loyalty to his brother, and eventually Damon's.
When Damon got a werewolf bite that would eventually kill him, Stefan sacrifices his good nature just for a cure.
Also notable is Elena's devotion to her family, willing to sacrifice herself just so Klaus(the main villain) will not kill them.
The music is great, as well.
The "sex" is just making out, and apparently now making out shirtless, but with pants on is sex. So I guess you could say that there's a fair amount of sex in this show.
It depends on how much your child can handle.
This show is amazing! I never really watch real people shows...and this one has captivated me. The story is great! It is pretty violent, but it's a show about Vampires! I think that it is way better than Tw*l*ght.
I tune in every Thursday nght for this. It's a great vampire show. My concerns of violence and poor role models are very slight. With vampires you're always going to have a bad side of things and violence, so to me both are really no concern.
The Vampire Diaries is an exceptional show all vampire fans must watch. The main characters, Stefan and Elena, are positive role models determined to do what is right. A clear theme of good vs. evil is present.
A very entertaining show but it's completely inappropriate for kids or most teenagers. The teenagers in the show basically act like irresponsible college-aged kids. They drink frequently, some do drugs, and most are promiscuous. The violence and language is standard fare for nighttime TV dramas.
This is a fantastic show, the acting is superb and the effects are very believable. I would recommend it for anyone 13 and over. This is the opposite of that twilight crap, so everyone with taste will adore The Vampire Diaries!
Great Mental Floss for Mom After the Kids Are in Bed
This is fun "guilty pleasure" watching for parents, but completely and irredeemably inappropriate for younger kids or tweens. As the CS review points out, there is plenty of drinking, drugging, and sexual themes for no good reason and the violence is VERY graphic-- every other show I'm surprised with what a network can get away with, violence-wise.
i've been watching all the episodes b/c of damon and elena my fav characters in the show. the episodes are good and compared to twilight much more mature and realistic. Can't wait too see how the show does.
This is a show I watch with my teenager. We both enjoy the drama, conflict, character development and interaction. It's a great story... love, destiny, & annoying brothers! Yes, there is drinking, drugs & casual sex, but we also see the consequences of these poor choices. There is also violence, of course, but very little on-screen, mostly "jump scenes" that teens love. Remains fairly true to the spirit of the books & basic plot, although my daughters says they have been "twilighted" making Elena too Bella-like.
Best show ever don't read the twilight series or even watch the movies it is crap compared to this show it is the best i have ever seen i love it, it's my new obsession but not for little kids
The Vampire Diaries, while entertaining, is a teen fantasy drama series. The violence, sexual content, language, and use of alcohol make this show for older teens an adults.
While I think that the show can get intense, violent, and sexual, it is also captivating. I even think that 13 year olds could watch this show. With more and more of this contents on T.V and the internet, most kids know about this stuff already. Then with the violence, while it can get gory, it's all obviously fake. I think that as parents, you just have to know what your child/teen can handle in a television show.
