About Me

My experiences working in online parenting and entertainment content were the perfect preparation for my role as Common Sense's executive editor. I began my editorial career at BabyCenter and then served as an editor at Reel.com, Emode.com (now Tickle.com), and AOL's Digital City before becoming the site content manager at Netflix and then moving to Common Sense. My favorite current TV shows are Lost, 30 Rock, How I Met Your Mother, Saturday Night Live (I'm a lifelong fan), Flight of the Conchords, and The Office. I have bachelor's and master's degrees from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.

When the Kids Are Asleep…

My Biggest Challenge Is:

Titles You’ve Reviewed

  • Movie: Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian

I rate this titleonand give it3.0

Fun, fast-paced sequel is more upbeat than the original.

Fans of the first Night at the Museum are sure to enjoy this fun, fast-paced sequel -- which has just as many ...

  • Book: Bloodhound: Beka Cooper, Book 2

I rate this titleonand give it4.0

Second book in fantasy series more mature than first.

Like its predecessor, Terrier, Bloodhound is much more of a crime procedural than a traditional fantasy ...

  • DVD: City of Ember

I rate this titleonand give it3.0

Fast-paced fantasy has lots of tense moments.

Based on Jeanne DuPrau's best-selling novel, City of Ember has an original premise and a fast pace -- both of ...

  • DVD: Camp Rock

I rate this titleonand give it3.0

Disney turns out a fun, clean, surefire tween hit.

CAMP ROCK is cute, fun, and full of positive messages about being true to yourself. Sure, the story's predictable and the characters aren't exactly what you'd call deep (though Lovato and Martin ...

  • DVD: Nim's Island

I rate this titleonand give it4.0

Book-based tropical adventure is good family fun.

Aside from the central email plot device, NIM'S ISLAND has the feel of an old-fashioned family adventure -- the kind star Foster made a couple of when she was a kid actor herself in the '70s ...

  • DVD: Definitely, Maybe

I rate this titleonand give it3.0

Teen-friendly romcom about love's ups and downs.

DEFINITELY, MAYBE is a refreshing change of pace from run-of-the-mill Hollywood romantic comedies, where it's all-too-often clear which characters will end up together from the order that their names ...

  • Book: The Fall: The Seventh Tower, Book 1

I rate this titleonand give it3.0

First book in action-packed, inventive series.

As evidenced in his other series (The Keys to the Kingdom and The Abhorsen Trilogy),

  • DVD: Sydney White

I rate this titleonand give it3.0

Tween star hits college; drinking, hazing ensue.

There's a reason Amanda Bynes is beloved by tweens everywhere. She's down-to-earth, funny, and cute as a button -- plus, she actually looks like a real person, rather than a stick-thin waif. She puts ...

  • TV: Extras

I rate this titleiffyand give it4.0

Office mate mines showbiz for laughs.

The meat and potatoes of Extras are the socially awkward moments that Andy and Maggie are constantly stumbling into, usually by accident (as when they unknowingly mock a woman with cerebral ...

  • DVD: Little Miss Sunshine

I rate this titleiffyand give it4.0

Ride along to dysfunction in quirky indie comedy.

It's true that the family road trip comedy isn't exactly a new genre; nor are quirky indie movies about dysfunctional families all that hard to come by. But somehow LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE manages to ...

  • TV: Weeds

I rate this titlenokidsand give it4.0

Raising kids (and more...) in the 'burbs. Adults.

WEEDS isn't the first TV show to expose the dark side of life in the suburbs, and it almost certainly won't be the last. But it's probably safe to say that it's the only series that goes behind ...

  • TV: 30 Days

I rate this titleonand give it4.0

Opening minds, one month at a time. Teens and up.

Unlike many reality shows, which place people in uncomfortable situations just to incite petty drama and bickering, 30 Days' lifestyle upheaval has a purpose: By putting real-life human ...
