About Me

I've worked for magazines and Web sites geared toward parents and teens covering topics like music education; health and even the Olsen twins. I'm the proud aunt of a 1 1/2-year-old (who isn't allowed to watch TV yet -- but will have Commonsensemedia.org's guidance when he does!) and enjoy spending time with my friends' children (who are all under age 10) and my friends (who are not. And that's all I'm allowed to say about that topic).

My Biggest Challenge Is:

Titles You’ve Reviewed

  • Web site: Webosaurs

I rate this titleonand give it4.0

Dino world offers generous free membership and great safety.

The site offers subscriptions, but it hardly seems worth the cost since the free membership, which lets you move from world to world, chat, and play games, offers more than enough to do. ...

  • Web site: Dinokids

I rate this titleonand give it3.0

Fee-based dino world offers extensive parental controls.

At the time of review, the site was still adding content to make the world more robust, so it's hard to say whether a subscription is worth the money. Kids can choose the dinosaur type, name, and ...

  • Web site: Buddy Browser

I rate this titleiffyand give it3.0

Browser limits surfing, but it isn't "set it and forget it."

Buddy Browser can help parents control what content their kids' access online -- long before kids ever log on. The nifty parental controls allow them to disable other Internet browsers while Buddy ...

  • Web site: Upper Deck U

I rate this titleiffyand give it3.0

Sports world requires trading cards and cash to access fun.

It can be a little bit cumbersome traveling around Upper Deck U because it's not always initially clear what there is to do in each section as you enter. However, the site does have a number of ...

  • Web site: Blah Girls

I rate this titleiffyand give it4.0

A guilty pleasure for celeb followers; beware iffy content.

Celeb gossip fans will find plenty of fun things to watch and read. The slightly sarcastic content is clever, the celebrity gossip is frequently updated, and the site's videos are hilarious. However, ...

  • Web site: Green

I rate this titleonand give it4.0

Ecology-themed virtual world makes it fun to go green.

We visited Green while it was still in beta, but the current content and functionality look promising. Navigating your way around the site is easy enough for little kids -- you move your ...

  • Web site: ClubTuki

I rate this titleonand give it4.0

Well-done educational games, both pay-to-play and free.

The site's interactive games are clever and fun to play -- creatures in a memory game make a face when you click on them, and cheers ring out when you pick the right letter in a word game. The ...

  • Web site: PlanetSoccerLive

I rate this titleonand give it3.0

Fun, unique soccer game charges a fee for premium features.

The site deserves kudos for its attempt to make sure kids have a safe (and potentially international) soccer experience -- users can chat with each other but can only use pre-selected questions and ...

  • Web site: Superbowl

I rate this titleonand give it4.0

Lots of ads, but mostly safe for game-loving kids.

The official Super Bowl site is a football fan's paradise. Fans get an inside glimpse at the Super Bowl media coverage, players, and on-the-field action from last season – without the ...

  • Web site: KidThing

I rate this titleonand give it4.0

Downloadable browser offers ad-free, fee-based content.

For parents concerned about the wild and wooly world of the Web, KidThing.com offers a safe way for kids to feel like they're using the Internet and for parents to control what they see. Based ...

  • Web site: Zilladog

I rate this titleonand give it4.0

Safe, free browser offers parent-controlled email and games.

Like it or not, the Internet is a growing part of kids' lives. So why not allow your kids to gain experience with this ever-present technology in a nurturing, safe way? Zilladog.com lets ...

  • Web site: FashionFantasyGame

I rate this titleonand give it4.0

Fashion business how-to game for teens and up.

The site's frequent use of pop-up windows is a little annoying. But the concept is clever: Give girls a taste of the business world via a fun game. And the site covers some impressive topics, ...
