Book: Almost Alice
I rate this titleiffyand give itAlice Series
Because this series extends over such a long period of the main character's life, parents need to be cautious which book in the series their kids are reading and when. My 10-year-old daughter ...

Book: The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey

My daughter and I read both books together and enjoyed them very much. The children are resourceful and entertaining, although the premise has some obvious holes. There is more danger and action ...

DVD: The Parent Trap
I rate this titleonand give itCute remake
This one is fun to watch. The story is (still) implausible, but Lohan is appealing as the two girls and the other characters are well cast. Some behavior (tricks and lying) that could be criticized, ...

DVD: Ice Princess
I rate this titleoffand give itMy concerns are:Sends the WRONG message to our smart girls!

DVD: Cow Belles
I rate this titleonand give itSilly by harmless
The plot is definitely implausible, but it shows two appealing girls learning that having money isn't everything and you can't just say "sorry" and have problems go away. The way they learn the ...

Book: The Penderwicks on Gardam Street
I rate this titleonand give itNot quite as good as the first
I really enjoy reading these books with my daughter (age 9.) Of course, we enjoy all those "old" stories by Eager and Nesbit too. This book was not quite as good as the first -- I felt she put too ...

Playdate Media Protocols: To Play or Not to Play
Your Comments:I'm pretty middle-of-the-road on permissiveness with my 10 year old daughter. We own no video game players, I preview or research movies, music and TV shows first, and allow only limited computer access. We still have a no-screen-time-during-playdates rule at our house, so other people don't have to worry about what their kids see here. I'm well aware that she sometimes watches things or plays games at other people's houses. I haven't let her go over to people's houses where I don't know them at least fairly well and I trust her instincts and honesty (so far!) about what she does there. So far, I've been restrictive about whose house she goes to more because of fear of unlocked guns than video exposure!
