KNOWING is a fine film that is as good a thriller as it could be, and an engaging thinker as well. However, often it borders on pure horror. The film tells of an MIT professor, John Koestler, who ...

What My Kids Love Now
My kids love 1.) Indiana Jones 2.) The Biggest Loser 3.) Star Trek
House Rules
Only about an hour on the computer every night (and not doing mindless games). No video games or movies until the weekend, only one educational show after school.
When the Kids Are Asleep…
1.) Law and Order: SVU 2.) Cold Case
My Biggest Challenge Is:
Trying to limit the innapropriate stuff in their lives. My kids are intellectually advanced and want the complexity and intrigue of a mature plotline, but the content that comes along with it is often innapropriate, and I have to say "no".

Let's Stop Inappropriate Movie Trailers
Your Comments:WHAT MOVIE DID YOU GO TO SEE? - Doubt, starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams. WHAT TRAILER WAS INAPROPRIATE? - The Proposal, starring Sandra Bullock. WHAT WAS INAPROPRIATE ABOUT IT? Sexual references. THE NAME OF THEATER: Twin Creek Cinema, Papillion NE (owned by Marcus Theatres) WHERE DO YOU LIVE: Papillion, NE COMMENTS: The trailer included references to a blanket being called "the baby maker", morning erections, and nudity (barely off-screen). The trailer wasn't necessarily inapropriate for my kids, who are 14, but the fact that it was green-band was very surprising. Also, on a side note, there was a trailer for 2012 when my family and I went to see a movie this fall (I don't remember what movie it was...maybe JULIE & JULIA?). The trailer was extremely violent, though not graphic. One shot shows hundreds of people being crushed instantly (a pillar from St. Peter's Square rolls over them). That massive and instantaneous violence alone warrants a PG-13, and that was just the trailer (greenband, I might add).

Harry Potter by Age and Stage
Your Comments:Great article...very helpful, though my kids, at 14, have already soaked up everything Harry. We waited until age 10.5 to start them on the books (because of the creepy spells and such), and they gobbled up all books (except book 7, which hadn't been released yet) in a month or so time span. We also let them watch all of the PG movies at that time, too. However, we let the PG-13 rated films wait until they were twelve, because of the intense subject matter. I really think it is a shame that this movie is rated PG, because that means one of two things: 1) It toned down the raw, emotional material that made the book so powerful, or 2) There are gonna be TONS of kids with nightmares tonight.

Let's Stop Inappropriate Movie Trailers
Your Comments:When my kids were little, they were frightened by a Harry Potter trailer (now they love Harry Potter, go figure!), but it wasn't inappropriate. Nowadays, though, I hear curse words in ALL APPROVED trailers. The new James Bond movie, QUANTUM OF SOLACE has a "d**n", "b**tard", and "what the h*ll" in the trailer, plus the suggestive line: "she won't bed with you unless you give her something she wants". Remarks like this aren't necessarily inapropriate for my kids, since they're 14, but they definately shouldn't be in age appropriate trailers. Others include ANGELS AND DEMONS (showing a bloody, dying man, gasping for breath and a man burning alive) and ADVENTURELAND (lines about imagining a lover naked). These are the previews that can show before G-rated movies. One of my kids is a big movie buff, and he like to get on IMdB and watch movie trailers. He's often told me about the content that's showed up in Green-band trailers (including the afore mentioned cursing and violence, as well as shots of people undressing and making out on a bed).

6th Graders Post Video About Killing Classmate
Your Comments:That is simply disgusting, no two ways about it. However, there is no way to prevent any kids other than yours from doing that sort of thing. You can educate your child about the dangers and harm of doing something like that, but you have no control over the kid down the street. This could be an opportunity to teach your kids that what others say doesn't matter. They need to be comfortable with themselves and who they are, and they can't let others dictate their opinions on anything, most importantly themselves. You can also talk about how all power isn't nessecarily good, and how there are consequences to everything you do. Lastly, you can just take the easiest step and block your kids from posting things online, or even screen whatever they post. That might make them mad, but hey! If the parents of those 6th graders had done that, this wouldn't have happened.

When Good Role Models Go Bad
Your Comments:It's important not to hold errors against celebrities forever; we all make mistakes. However, it's important that kids see that all mistakes have consequences, ex: Michael Phelps losing sponsorships. You can use these news frenzies as a lesson too, and your kids can learn from others' mistakes. They can make sure they don't let anything go to their head or think of themselves as above the law or common ethics.

Tips for Fun Family Movie Night
Your Comments:We usually have our Family Movie Nights every week or every two weeks on Fridays. We usually watch a family favorite (like NATIONAL TREASURE, OCTOBER SKY, JURASSIC PARK, etc.) or check out a new movie from the library. Kids (I know ours do) always love to see and hear new things, so we check out movies from the library a lot for our movie nights. NOTE: Libraries are great sources for movies, but we always check on COMMONSENSE or SCREENIT.COM before viewing, and you probably should too.
