What’s the Story?

Verizon has teamed up with several emergency response organizations, including the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the International Association of Fire Chiefs, to create an educational program for 4- to 7-year-old children. The purpose is to teach them when it is appropriate to call 911 and when it is not. They also learn how to make the call and what to say to emergency personnel. There's an offline kit that can be ordered for classroom use, but much of the information is available at this site, including lesson plans and presentation tips. Spokesmascot Red E. Fox also presents a QuickTime video quiz show featuring a series of skits. Kids need to decide if 911 should be called, or not.

Is It Any Good?

The quiz show video worked under Windows NT, but did not load under Macintosh OSX using Safari. It did work OK on a Mac using Firefox. The video featuring sports star Tim Brown did not load on either platform.

Unfortunately, the Flash Quiz game doesn't work right either, as it is impossible to get a passing score. This will frustrate kids who have given all the right answers. Disappointing in a different way is the "hangman-style" word game. The child is asked to guess and spell words before a house burns down. Every time they guess a wrong letter another window bursts into flame. But how many young children can guess or spell "seizure" or "poison"?
