What Parents Need to Know

This review of BeckyBones was written by Denise Duval

Parents need to know that this is the online community for eco-conscious brand and character Becky Bones, inspiring teens to do something about saving the planet. The articles and videos, are safe and informative, although the videos do link to YouTube.com which has some iffy videos. There's no advertising, and the only merchandise available is from licensing partners who have agreed to donate 25 percent of sales to environmental causes such as establishing tree planting programs and recycling centers.

  • Families can talk about why it's important to plant trees, recycle, drive less, buy environmentally-friendly products, and how they can get involved in saving the planet both at home, at school, and in their communities. How can the small things we do to preserve our environment have significant impact for future generations? Does the media expand our awareness of environmental causes?

More on BeckyBones

What’s the Story?

Launched in January of 2008, eco-portal BECKYBONES.COM is getting teens to think and talk about the things they can do to save the planet. It has practical, easily implemented ideas on living an eco-friendly life, user-submitted videos with environmental themes, and several "episodes" chronicling the adventures of title-character Becky Bones and her buddies Drip the dog, Lucy Lies the robot, and Tree, who gets planted at the end of every episode. Teens can also enter to win a grant for their own environmental causes. Shoes from skater brand Osiris are the first merchandise collaboration with the site, but this will soon expand to organic hoodies and tees, dolls, books, and accessories.

Is It Any Good?

Still in its fledgling stage, there aren't too many reasons to come back to the site frequently. However, with the availability of more Becky Bones merchandise and growing partnerships with other social networking sites popular with teens (all part of the site's mission and goals), the more likely BeckyBones.com is to become a happening destination and cool brand for the teen with a social conscience.

    I love Becky Bones

The website is good. It has Becky Bone's story of how she became who she was and the name Becky Bones may sound wierd at first but if you read the story it makes ALOT more sense. I bought the sneakers and they are pricey. $65.00 for sneakers but 25% went to planting trees. They look nice too. I love the Becky Bones company. It's by Osiris Girls. And they make NICE sneakers.
