Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 12–14

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

    Not an issue.
  • Messages:

Message boards encourage users to be respectful and helpful.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

Lots of it, ranging from epic fantasy battles to cops and robbers realism.
  • Sex:

Some of the Vertigo titles, such as the American Virgin and Bite Club series, contain nudity and sex scenes.
  • Language:

Four-letter words don't make the cut on message boards, but variations like "WTF" and "F#^k" do. There's cursing in some Vertigo titles.
  • Consumerism:

Though there are links to booksellers and a few scattered ads, this content-rich site isn't overly commercial.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

Characters smoke pot in Vertigo's title, Lucifer: Devil in the Gateway.

What Parents Need to Know

About DCComics

Parents need to know that most of this site is fine for older tweens and young teens, but kids might stumble on some explicit material in the comics such as swearing, epic fantasy battles, and nudity and sex scenes. The site does warn users that they're about to encounter explicit material, but that's probably more of a draw than a deterrent. The message boards are moderated and four-letter words get the star treatment (**** that is).

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about whether comics have the same effect on kids as "real" images. Does a shocking or inappropriate drawing make less of an impression than a photo or video of the same nature, or can it be just as detrimental? Families can also discuss which comics kids like and why. Are they drawn to the storylines? The art? If they were to create their own comic, what would it be like?

I cant belive your giving it a 13+!!! In my jr school they had loads of them! Like "The New Adventures"! When my teacher told me and my class to do a libery visit, me and my mates just sat on the chairs, layed back and piked up a DCcomic. Bye the time we had left the school, we had proberly read all of them! And tell me, who Doesnt like Batman Robin Spiderman The x-men super man ect??? .... 5+ because it has some girls in bikinis in some of them.

I rate this title iffy for age 13 and give it 3.0

    Too Much Role Playing

These are fictional characters, don't play up to the real world. To some kids, they might want to put it in action in real life. Especially kids that are unstable. Use it as an escape from their real life.
