Video content can get steamy on the dance floor.

Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 16–17

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

Depending upon the video, teens may either be learning new dance moves and voting in fun competitions or objectifying women and glorifying crime.

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

The idea behind the site -- to bring dancers from all over the world on the same video "stage" to compete against each other -- is a niche social networking idea that could create an interesting community if the site is used properly. In its beta version, the site is still taking shape and adding new members.
  • Violence:

Some content that unfortunately has become synonymous with rap videos -- fist fights, guns, crime, jail references.
  • Sex:

The site has rules against sexually explicit materials, and it has a "Flag Objectionable Material" feature. But, some videos -- especially some professional ones -- are sexually explicit. Also, member photos and profiles can be unpredictable. Although most of the stuff is tame, there's at least one completely nude profile shot and one with a woman's behind fully exposed.
  • Language:

Mild swearing, but used positively ("damn" in a compliment about a dance). Slang some people may find objectionable.
  • Consumerism:

Small ads for music and related products. Some of the videos and member profiles are more like press releases or commercials for professional dance and rap artists, like 50 Cent, LL Cool J, Lil Mama, and others.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    None observed.

What Parents Need to Know

About DanceJam

Parents need to know that this the video uploading and social networking site about dancing was created by MC Hammer and friends, and although it promotes dancing, does have some iffy comments in the profiles, links to teens' personal MySpace pages, and sexually-charged dancing, photos, and images in videos. Some of the professional rap videos also have violent imagery -- fist fights, guns, crime, jail references. Site rules say you're supposed to be 16 to use it, but there are currently videos posted of dancers clearly under 16.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about how teens can safely use Web sites like this with both negative and positive content: Make use of the good features (viewing the dance tutorials and watching and voting on the head-to-head competitions), and report any inappropriate content. Also, discuss why it's hard to distinguish the professional material from advertising. Is a dancer/rapper who posts a profile on the site to socialize or advertise?
