What parents need to know

Parents need to know that some of the poems contain mild potty humor, while others could be seen as disrespectful to teachers and parents. Preview the pages and guide your kids to the gold on this site instead. There are links to sites where the poetry books are sold, but otherwise there's no advertising on the site.

What's it about?

Poetry and wordplay are celebrated at this site, which features everything from how to write a limerick to a collection of silly poems about school, homework, gym class, and more. Try a "poetry race" with your friends and see how fast you can say a tongue-twister about "Betty Botter." Or act out poems suggested in "Poetry Theater." Aspiring poets can enter one of the site's ongoing poetry contests, but if you're not into writing your own poems, you can grade the work of others. Meadowbrook Press offers a page of recent poems written for kids by adults, Rate them A-F to let the editors know if the lines are hot or not.

Is it any good?

This is a wonderful site to get kids to really enjoy poetry. Not only is it well organized, but its colorful graphics, fun writing "contests," and expansive choices of goofy poems are also perfect for budding tween poets. Parents will appreciate the fact that kids can discover how to express themselves through poetry, but kids will be having too much fun to realize they're actually learning something.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about writing poetry. Have you ever written a poem? If so, what kind? Do you think writing something down is a good release for some kids? Why are funny poems sometimes more easy to relate to?
