What parents need to know

Parents need to know that on Harry Potter -- Warner Bros., users will find little more than trailers and clips -- some of them on the violent and scary side -- from past and upcoming Potter films, a game, and Potter-related downloads. Also, kids can follow the "shop" link to buy Potter merchandise.

Educational value: Meant to entertain rather than educate.
Positive messages: The movie and book series encourage friendship, trust, and self-acceptance.
Violence: Film clips feature some scary, supernatural scenes.
Sex: Film clips include scenes with kissing.
Language: Not applicable.
Consumerism: The site is designed to promote Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, and contains numerous plugs for movie-related merchandise (and IMAX); an online store offers toy wands, DVDs, and other merchandise.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Not applicable.
Privacy & safety: While users are not required to register to view the Harry Potter site, there are several places where it is possible to disclose personal information, such as subscribing to the newsletter or registering an account on the main Warner Bros. site. If users follow the link on the site to "Join the Final Battle" and decide to use the Facebook app, they will allow access to personal information via Facebook.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
  • Families can talk about why the Harry Potter series is so popular. What about Harry do readers connect with? What lessons can kids take away from his adventures?

  • Some of the movie's content appears to be violent and/or scary. How do you know if a movie is too scary for kids your age? When should you ask your parents if a movie is something you shouldn't be watching? (Parents: For advice on how to handle creepy cinema, check out our scary movie tips.)

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

Diehard fans will find plenty of Potter paraphernalia on HARRYPOTTER -- WARNER BROS: The site includes movie photos, trailers, downloadable posters, wallpaper, screensavers, and more. Kids have several options to get in on the action: They can sign up for an e-newsletter, connect to the movie on Facebook, or learn about the latest Harry Potter video game. An additional section links to the official Harry Potter DVD site, which offers more info on past installments of the series.

There's a ton of info about the latest movie on hand, so kids hoping to get a peek at part one of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows are in luck. However, aside from a motorbike game, the site's activities are pretty much limited to viewing movie info or buying or downloading promotional goods. But chances are, Harry Potter fans won't much mind -- what self-respecting Muggle wouldn't be thrilled with the chance to download seven different Harry Potter-themed wallpaper designs?

Online interaction: Users can't chat with each other or connect on the site, although there is a link to "Join the Final Battle" with an app on Facebook, where members can connect, as well as links to other sites where they can interact with other Harry Potter fans.
