Parents need to know

Parents need to know that on this site, users will find little more than trailers and clips from past and upcoming Potter films, interviews with stars, a few games, and message boards dedicated to all things Potter. The boards aren't controlled but any postings violating the site's guidelines will be taken down. Buyers beware: Kids can link to a store to get Potter merchandise.

Families can talk about why the Harry Potter series is so popular. What about Harry do readers connect with? What kinds of attributes make Harry a likable character? And what lessons can kids take away from his adventures?

What's the story?

Those salivating for a look at the upcoming Order of the Phoenix will be happy to see a high-quality airing of the trailer at HARRYPOTTER.WARNERBROS.COM. And a tour of "Harry Potter Pensieve" houses Q&As, including kid-friendly fare such as what it's like to work with young actors, cast interviews, and clips from past films. The coolest part of the site is Marauder's Map -- a hidden interactive drawing of Hogwarts and its surroundings with links to games, wand shops, and more. There's also an interactive area full of message boards delving into every imaginable Potter topic.

Is it any good?

Fans who can't get enough of Harry Potter might be disappointed after a tour of HarryPotter.WarnerBros.com. That's because beyond movie trailers, film clips, and a few games, there's very little to engage the user. And although postings are robust and offer Potter fans a place to connect with like-minded groupies, given the popularity of the series, the site feels shallow.

Parents should be fine letting their kids log on (beware, though, that the boards are all ages and aren't monitored although postings violating the site's guidelines will be taken down) but don't expect them to stay long.

Nuts and bolts

  • Playability: Easy
  • Reading Required: Light
  • Graphics: Lively film clips
