Parents need to know
Parents need to know that there are quite a few ads, including a "You've won our hourly prize!" banner at the top and an ad box on the right. If you pay an annual subscription fee you'll get additional content and an ad-free version. The site also offers "iPoints" to members who "bring in a buddy" by challenging a friend to a game or emailing an activity to a pal. Kids should be reminded that they should respect others' privacy and not disclose email addresses without permission.
Families can talk about the benefits of combining learning with playing. How do the games on this site help you learn something? Can you think of other creative ways to learn something new?

This site offers games and activities for a wide age range: preschool though sixth grade. Search by grade level or subject area to find enough choices for everyone in the family. Preschoolers can learn to count, recognize shapes, and practice with phonics as they play colorful games with lots of giggles per level. Math games include "Dam Jammer," where you select various geometric shapes to plug gaping holes in a large dam, and "Leon's Math Dojo," where players try to solve math problems whose answers are written on a series of punching bags. And science fans might like "Science Activity of the Week," an interactive multimedia learning experience combined with a movie. Some of the topics are: volcanoes, solar system, and the human body.
Is it any good?
Many of these high-interest games offer a teacher's guide, mapped to standards for learning objectives for each grade. While the kids have fun, parents can be assured that they really are learning something by playing these terrific educational games.
