Common Sense Note
Parents need to know that this site directory and search engine, created and maintained by librarians, does link to many sites that require kids to know how to read. Parents can feel safe about their kids surfing here to find useful and age-appropriate information, since administrators won't list sites that collect private information, charge a fee, are product-driven, or promote violence, hatred, or illegal activities. Parents may notice that the site includes some topics that can be controversial, such as abortion, AIDS, drug abuse, and sexual orientation, but the site's policy is to catalog sites that provide objective, age-appropriate information so kids can understand these topics when they come up in the news.
Families can talk about why it's often better to go to a kid-safe site like KidsClick than to Google to find the best age-appropriate, reliable information. What are the benefits of having search engines and sites designed just for kids? What are safe sites to browse? How can you tell which sites you can trust? Families can also talk about how to search online. The site's lessons and activities in the Worlds of Web Searching section answers some good questions: Is it better to use a word or a phrase when searching for something? What is a "filtered" search engine?

From aardvarks to zoos -- and more than 600 subjects in between -- KIDSCLICK.ORG has something for every surfer. Kids can browse by topic or use a search engine, and each site cataloged includes a description and reading level. The breadth of information is impressive, from homework helpers like how a bill becomes a law to fun stuff like classic arcade games and origami instruction. There's also help for kids facing tough issues like bullying or the death of a family member, and a special section with resources for kids affected by Hurricane Katrina. Kids and parents alike can learn from the Worlds of Web Searching lessons, though some lessons may be too difficult for younger kids. Older kids who are used to graphic-heavy sites might find this site's design a little bland.
Fans of this site might also like kids.yahoo.com and kids.nypl.org.
