What to watch out for

  • Messages:

    Teen cliques, rocky romances, and fraught friendships are glorified. Characters don't talk about anything of substance.

  • Violence:

    Not an issue.

  • Sex:

    There's kissing and general recounting of romantic escapades. Nonstop chatter about who's hooking up with whom or who's cheating on whom.

  • Language:

    Not an issue.

  • Consumerism:

    You can buy LB goods -- ringtones, the soundtrack, downloadable songs, calendar; and users are constantly bombarded with ads. This site also leads users to pages promoting other MTV shows.

  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Drinking is alluded to and characters appear intoxicated in some episodes.

About Laguna Beach

Parents need to know that this site -- based on the TV show -- is better for mature teens thanks to the some racy content (loads of talk about hooking up and sexual escapades) and bad behavior (drinking, cliques, cheating on significant others, and focusing on self-image). Although the site offers some milder content (Q&A sessions, biographies, episode guides, and a virtual community), your kids can still watch entire episodes online. It's attached to MTV, so expect lots of advertising and links back to the main MTV site.
