Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 13–16

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

Some of the puzzle games are mildly skill building.

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

In many of the games, death and destruction earn you points. Juvenile humor in some game can be irreverent.
  • Violence:

Lots of games involving fighting (punching, kicking), shooting, or war, but nothing too bloody or gory.
  • Sex:

    Not an issue.
  • Language:

Some snarkiness and irony, but no profanity.
  • Consumerism:

There's a prominent ad on each page, including some ads for fast food.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About Miniclip

Parents need to know that this is a very popular gaming hub for middle school kids, and the range of games and the ease of play make it extremely addicting. As for the content, the action games (bombing, punching), sports games, shoot 'em ups (none gory), and political cartoons showcase adolescent humor, although some of the games are actually sweet. The site recently added a social networking feature. To join, kids can register with a username, password, email address, and birthdate. The site says it requires kids under 13 to fill out a permission form to sign up, but that never materialized during registration. The social networking features are pretty safe, though -- kids can add friends, play against them in multiplayer challenges, and send them preselected messages only.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about what good amount of time is for playing online games, and draw up some guidelines for balanced use. Parents can ask kids what appeals to them about the site and ask how they feel about the more violent games. Does "cartoon" violence make less of an impression than more realistic media like videos or photos? What message does it send when hurting people or animals scores points in a game? Families can also watch our video about online gaming.

    My concerns are:
    • Excessive violence
    • Excessive consumerism
    • Safety is an issue

This website has pretty good games, only a few of them are violent which are under the 'Shoot 'em up' category. There are a few political games which could be offensive to parties especially Republicans (which I am not so don't really care).

  5. I rate this title iffy for age 8 and give it 3.0
    My concerns are:
    • Excessive consumerism

    • My highlights are:
    • Educational
    • User content is age appropriate

This site is more for the younger kids, with the variety of games more revolved around the child side. However, there are some great puzzle games there like bloxorz and anagrammatic, as well as some interesting shooters like heli attack and commando 2.
