  • Common Sense says

YouTube wannabe has iffy videos; some fine.

Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 16–18

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

There are many videos that are educational, historical, or entertaining. It's difficult to view these videos, however, without also seeing inappropriate content.

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Videos that show people hurting themselves or in humiliating circumstances have been some of the recent popular videos. Other videos are completely fine.
  • Violence:

Violent videos include horror movie clips, anime, and homemade graphic stunts. However, many videos don't include any violence.
  • Sex:

The lack of age-verification safety nets mean any viewer can easily watch sexually explicit content -- and there's plenty of it. But, there are a lot of clean videos, too.
  • Language:

Language can be explicit in videos. Also, even age-appropriate videos often include offensive and lewd comments from viewers. On the other hand, not all videos have bad language and/or comments.
  • Consumerism:

Video commercials play beside videos and many videos submitted by companies either for product advertising (i.e. Kraft's "Sandwich in Disguise") or Web site promotion (one video of a woman stripping promotes an adult video site). Movie trailers are also prominent.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

All three can be seen on user submitted videos, and some show underage drinking. Some videos are drug- and alocohol-free.

What Parents Need to Know

About MySpaceTV

Parents need to know that this video site offers no warning about the content, perhaps because pornography, extreme violence, and all-out nudity are prohibited on the site. But, this doesn't mean that all the videos are suitable for all ages. Many include graphic, adults-only footage, and it's hard to surf around without seeing half-naked gyrating women, horror movie clips, explicit music videos, and violent acts. That said, there are also some really funny, smart, and interesting clips, too. Members can link directly to their MySpace page from their video and some of the members' comments could get a little inappropriate.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about the viral world. What should and shouldn't be uploaded to a video site? Also, why are many of the videos posted in the first place? Is there a commercial interest? Families can also talk about what effect negative sexual stereotypes have on women and men.

    CREEPY!!

I was watching some playful video of dancing squares. Ones name was Blocky. The other one was named Squiggles. I was like watching it for 3 minutes then all of a sudden a freaky face with no eyballs and maggots crawling out of its mouth popped up and started yelling at me screaming GO TO HELL!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! I got so scared i ran out of the room and started crying. The bad thing is when you go back into the room with the computer in it The face is still there screaming. Try to avoid all videos that say The Dancing Squares Go To Happyland. This website is scary and if anyone over 70 watches that video, They will probably have a heart attack. DO NOT GO HERE!
