Parents need to know that there are full episodes and video clips available on this site -- that means primetime content (think, The Office, Heroes, Law & Order) meant for mature audiences. There is a link to Saturday Night Live that also shows many skits that may not be appropriate for younger ages. The message boards aren't monitored, but posts seem to stay on topic, and users can report inappropriate posts.
It's a cinch to find your favorite NBC show, when it airs, or what you missed on this network's hub. There are full episodes available from shows like Las Vegas, Heroes, Medium, and Late Night with Conan O'Brien, among others. Users can bond in the community message boards (it's easy to register; the only thing required is an email address and DOB). Here, members can upload videos and photos (for all to see) or start a blog. All games on the site are free and harmless and only require Flash plug-ins.
NBC may not have Jennifer Aniston or Katie Couric anymore, but they do have a top-notch site that is clear, colorful, and easy to navigate. But, there's a reason these shows are on at night, and it ain't so the kiddies can watch them. For instance, there are graphic images in Medium where a woman's head has been decapitated. One Heroes clip shows a man being murdered by being shot in the head. And on Las Vegas, you'll see plenty of cleavage. If you don't mind your kids watching these shows during primetime, then don't mind them browsing the site.
Families can talk about the popularity of watching TV and movies via the Internet. Why do you think that more and more people are logging on to see TV on their computer screens? How can this affect the entertainment and media industries? Would the effect be negative or positive?
