common sense media says

NBC shows streaming online; some iffy stuff.

parents & educators say

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that there are full episodes and video clips available on this site -- that means primetime content (think, The Office, Heroes, Law & Order) meant for mature audiences. There is a link to Saturday Night Live that also shows many skits that may not be appropriate for younger ages. The message boards aren't monitored, but posts seem to stay on topic, and users can report inappropriate posts.

Educational value: Not applicable.
Positive messages: There's a link to Access Hollywood which often has articles about plastic surgery and young starlets which could promote poor self-image in teens and young adults; questionable themes of deception, pride, materialism, gambling, evil-doers in other shows.
Violence: Graphic images in Medium and Heroes show decapitated head, murder, guns, blood.
Sex: Full episodes available on site; some sexual innuendo, banter, activity; couples kissing, half-undressed women, blatant display of cleavage and focus on female assets on different shows. Coastal Dreams is soap aimed at teens and young adults and is available only on NBC.com. It's sexy and melodramatic, with love triangles and skimpy clothing.
Language: Mild language; "ass," "hell," "damn."
Consumerism: Only advertising for shows and link to buy show merchandise. Few commercials. Some shows showcase different brands.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Some social drinking and smoking on available show episodes.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
Families can talk about the popularity of watching TV and movies via the Internet. Why do you think that more and more people are logging on to see TV on their computer screens? How can this affect the entertainment and media industries? Would the effect be negative or positive?

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

NBC may not have Jennifer Aniston or Katie Couric anymore, but they do have a top-notch site that is clear, colorful, and easy to navigate. But, there's a reason these shows are on at night, and it ain't so the kiddies can watch them. For instance, there are graphic images in Medium where a woman's head has been decapitated. One Heroes clip shows a man being murdered by being shot in the head. And on Las Vegas, you'll see plenty of cleavage. If you don't mind your kids watching these shows during primetime, then don't mind them browsing the site.
