Polly dolls invite fans to have fun -- and shop.

Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 8–10

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

One game gives basic facts about sea creatures; aside from that, no real educational value.

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Polly's games and activities are mindless and superficial -- her life appears to be all about shopping, fashion, hairstyles, decorating, and partying with her friends.
  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

    Not an issue.
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

The site is heavily geared toward the Polly Pocket toys and enticing Polly fans to buy the various dolls and accessories. Pop-ups advertising the toys sometimes appear at the onset of the interactive games. Also, several prominent banners either hawk the Polly toys or point users to similar Web sites that are light on substance and heavy on consumerism (Barbie.com, EverythingGirl.com).
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

This review of PollyPocket was written by Larisa Wiseman

Parents need to know that this site heavily promotes the Polly Pocket line of dolls and accessories. The site's home page alone displays two prominent links encouraging users to browse the catalog of toys; you have to dig deeper to find the interactive games, which themselves are based on Polly Pocket toys. Also, the games offer little substance, and many focus on materialism and external appearance -- shopping for fashionable clothes and accessories, giving Polly a new hairstyle, or redecorating her room, for example.

What’s the Story?

Is It Any Good?

Shopping and primping are a big focus here, and the interactive games reinforce that mindset; their obvious intention is to entertain and get girls to buy merchandise, not to stimulate their minds. Although the games are fun and simple enough for younger girls, many of their themes are more appropriate for tweens or even teens because of their emphasis on glamour, style, partying, and driving. The site's activities and colorful animation are good for a little lighthearted fun, but not much else.

This site is accually pretty fun! You can play a lot of games, which are not educational, but, i don't really see a problem with that. I mean you get educational stuff at school. When you go to websites at home, it is to have fun, not to get educational stuff. All girls should visit this site. You can find polly friends and get jewls, and when you have all of the jewls, you get a free coloring page! So come and dress Polly and all of her friends in funky styles and just have an all around good time!

    Po-l-l-l- polly MSG!

Polly Pocket has about two or three games on the website, A LOT of msg, and they want you to buy a lot of things. A lot of adds. It is at least for a seven or eight year old, and this website gets boring once you have tried a lot.
