Why We Rated This on for Ages 7 and Up

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

Kids can learn about history, art, and other subjects at different points on the islands.
  • Messages:

Kids can complete missions by helping out characters on the islands. Younger kids could feel rejected if their requests to chat or play games are ignored.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

A few creepy critters (bats, snakes), but no violence.
  • Sex:

    Not an issue.
  • Language:

Character names and chat phrases are prescripted, so there's no chance of profanity.
  • Consumerism:

There's a prominent ad for Apple Jacks cereal that looks like game content.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About Poptropica

Parents need to know that this very popular virtual world and adventure game is fun, safe, and sometimes educational. Unlike many adventure games, players don't fight, get hurt, lose, or die. Kids can chat using prescripted phrases, and can challenge each other to play simple arcade-style games. One thing to note is that younger kids could feel rejected if their requests to chat or play games are ignored. Kids choose a username and password so they can reenter the game where they left off, but other players don't see that name; instead, the site assigns each kid a preselected name like Cool Starfish or Fearless Hippo. There's one prominent, recurring ad for Apple Jacks cereal that players pass as they walk through screens.

        Great for Everybody!!!!

I'm eleven, and I passed it on to like, 10 of my friends. It's so much fun, and you don't have to pay like stupid Club Penguin. You get explore, collect, and compete, and it's perfect for all kids. There are no bad sides, except that it's addicting! I recommend it to all kids like me.

Poptropica is a great website for kids 7 and up. On poptropica, there are different islands that you can "solve." On an island, you help te people of that island fix it. There are buildings on the islands where you can interact with other players and where you can switch clothes with them, play games, or chat using preloaded phrases.
