What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this site is about promoting the Quiksilver brand. Most of the content is fine for kids, although one of the athletes interviewed gets a little graphic, citing his "girlfriend's g-spot" as one of his favorite "local spots," and lists "chronic masturbation" among his favorite hobbies. There are also photos featuring alcohol and girls in bikinis. The site's privacy policy says that it doesn't collect information from users under 13, but the registration page (which requires only an email address and birth date) doesn't seem to prevent younger users from registering. Registration is just for receiving site updates -- there's no chat or social networking. There are many links to outside Web sites, including e-commerce sites.

  • Some sexual comments -- about chronic masturbation and find the g-spot -- in athletes' profiles.

  • The site is all about promoting the brand: selling its gear, publicizing its events, and showcasing the athletes it sponsors.
  • A few photos show wine and beer at events.

What's it about?

QUIKSILVER.COM is the online headquarters of one of the largest international manufacturers of boarding gear -- surf, snow, skate, and wake. Its product section has a catalog of Quiksilver merch and tells users where they can buy it. The Quiksilver brand extends way beyond clothing, though -- its name is attached to hundreds of events and athletes it sponsors. Fans will enjoy video clips of Tony Hawk's skate tricks or reading a Q&A with surfer Kelly Slater. The site also has video podcasts, wallpaper, news, and Quikcuts, a music section featuring bands that appear in Quiksilver DVDs and web promos.

Is it any good?

The bottom line? Some decent content; a ton of cross promotion.
