What Parents Need to Know
About Scholastic.com/kids
Parents need to know that this site aims to be something of an online book center, but gets caught up in the consumerism side of things with a shopping section, many links to products, and a lot of information (that kids will probably ignore) about just how much money Scholastic rakes in every year. That said, the kids' publishing monolith has spared no expense in creating a rich repository of fun things to read, games to play, and even a helpful section on how to write a research paper.

Families Can Talk About
- Families can talk about consumerism on Web sites. How does this site market toward kids? What makes you want to buy a book? Does it make you more or less likely to buy something if there's an ad about it? How can you ignore the marketing messages? Families can also discuss the importance of reading and how books can change lives.
